Luning, Nevada
Luning (formerly Deep Wells) is an unincorporated town in Mineral County, Nevada, in the United States. Luning is located on U.S. Route 95, between Hawthorne and Mina. Luning had an active railroad loading facility for many years. Magnesium ore from Gabbs was trucked to Luning and transferred to railroad cars bound for the West in World War II. The Basic Refractories mine in Gabbs was opened in 1955; it produced magnesium that was also trucked to the Luning loading platform, where most men in town worked. A sign on the Long Branch Saloon says "Settled 1864." The saloon - still open in 1980 - has since closed. The town's one-room school is well maintained, but is also closed. It is often listed as a ghost town, but it is not. The population of Luning, Nevada, as of 2005 is 87. There is also an active page for the "ghost" town on Facebook, maintained by residents. Unincorporated Towns In Nevada
Nevada state law allows for governance of unincorporated towns under two different systems. The Unincorporated government Law, adopted in 1975, applies to counties of 100,000 people or more, and any other county that opts in. For other counties, a patchwork system of laws applies. A 1975 study by the state Legislative Commission identified 39 unincorporated towns in Nevada. As of 2014, the state Demographer's Office listed 44 unincorporated towns. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Carson And Colorado Railway
The Carson and Colorado Railway was a U.S. narrow gauge railroad that ran from Mound House, Nevada, to Keeler, California below the Cerro Gordo Mines. It was incorporated on May 10, 1880 as the Carson and Colorado ''Railroad'', and construction on the railroad began on May 31, 1880. The narrow gauge track was chosen to reduce cost. Much of the route now parallels U.S. Route 95 Alternate, U.S. Route 95, Nevada State Route 360, U.S. Route 6, and U.S. Route 395. The Carson and Colorado began operations with a single Baldwin , the ''Candelaria''. The first train arrived at Keeler on August 1, 1883. The route reached an altitude of in Montgomery Pass. The Southern Pacific (or Espee from the railroad initials- SP) was an American Class I railroad network that existed from 1865 to 1996 and operated largely in the Western United States. Mina, Nevada
Mina is a census-designated place in Mineral County in west-central Nevada, United States. It is located along U.S. Route 95 (38° 23' 25" N 118° 06' 30" W) at an elevation of . The 2010 population was 155. History Mina was founded as a railroad town in 1905 and was named for Ferminia Sarras, a large landowner and famed prospector known as the 'Copper Queen.' The Carson and Colorado Railway, a division of Southern Pacific Railroad, had a station in the town. The railroad is long gone – the last section between Thorne and Mina shut down in 1985 –, but at one time a local shuttle called the "Slim Princess" allowed Native Americans to ride free of charge atop the railcars, and passengers and crew would shoot wild game from open windows.
