Louis Rémy Sabattier
Louis Rémy Sabattier (; 23 May 1863 – 1935) was a French artist best known for his work for the magazine lL'Illustration, Illustration'' over a forty-year period. Early years Louis Rémy Sabattier was born in Annonay, Ardèche on 23 May 1863. In 1878 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Étienne. He moved to Paris where he entered the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) and then Gustave Boulanger (1824–88). He studied under Gustave Boulanger at the Académie Julian in Paris. Career Sabattier began work collaborating on creation of large panoramas, notably of Rezonville and of Reichshoffen. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1890. Sabattier's first drawings of Parisian life appeared in lIllustration'' in 1895. For lIllustration'' he traveled to Tonkin, Russia, Ethiopian Empire, Abyssinia and then Morocco with Hubert Lyautey. Annonay
Annonay (; ) is a Communes of France, commune and largest city in the north of the Ardèche department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. It is the most populous commune in the Ardèche department although it is not the capital which is the smaller town of Privas. Other communes in the Ardèche department are Aubenas, Guilherand-Granges, and Tournon-sur-Rhône. Hubert Lyautey
Louis Hubert Gonzalve Lyautey (17 November 1854 – 27 July 1934) was a French Army general and colonial administrator. After serving in Indochina and Madagascar, he became the first French Resident-General in Morocco from 1912 to 1925. In early 1917, he served briefly as Minister of War. From 1921, he was a Marshal of France. He was dubbed the ''French empire builder'' and in 1931 made the cover of ''Time (magazine), Time''. Lyautey was also the first one to use the term "Winning hearts and minds, hearts and minds" as part of his strategy to counter the Black Flag Army, Black Flags rebellion during the Tonkin campaign in 1885. Jeanne Chauvin
Jeanne Chauvin (22 April 1862 – 7 September 1926) was the second woman to obtain a degree in law in France, in 1890. Her application to be sworn in as a lawyer was at first rejected, but after the law was changed in 1900 she was the second French woman to be authorized to plead at the bar (after Olga Petit.) Nevertheless, certain resources still erroneously identify Chauvin as the first female lawyer in France's history. Early years Jeanne Marie Marguerite Chauvin was born in Jargeau, Loiret, on 22 April 1862. Her parents were Jean Cezary Chauvin, a notary, and Marie Émilie Leseur. Chauvin's father died while she was a child, and the family moved to Paris. Jeanne Chauvin was the second woman to earn a law degree in France, at the Faculty of Law of Paris. The Exposition Universelle of 1900 (), better known in English as the 1900 Paris Exposition, was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 14 April to 12 November 1900, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. Hubert-Joseph Henry
Hubert-Joseph Henry (2 June 1846 – 31 August 1898) was a French lieutenant-colonel in 1897 involved in the Dreyfus affair. Arrested for having forged evidence against Alfred Dreyfus, he was found dead in his prison cell. He was considered a hero by the Anti-Dreyfusards. Early life and career Hubert-Joseph Henry was born into a farming family. He enlisted in the French Army as an infantryman in 1865. Promoted to sergeant-major in 1868, Henry served in the Franco-Prussian War, being captured twice but each time successfully escaping. In 1870, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in an infantry regiment. In 1875 Henry was appointed as an aide to General Joseph de Miribel, Chief of the General Staff. Four years later Henry, now a captain, joined the Statistics Section of the Ministry of War - the office responsible for counter-intelligence. Georges-Gabriel De Pellieux
George Gabriel de Pellieux (6 September 1842 – 15 July 1900) was a French army officer who was best known for ignoring evidence during the Dreyfus affair, a scandal in which a Jewish officer was convicted of treason on the basis of a forgery. Early years George-Gabriel de Pellieux was born in Strasbourg, France on 6 September 1842. His father, Captain Jean Honoré Théodore Pellieux, served in the 10th artillery regiment. George-Gabriel de Pellieux entered the military college of Saint Cyr when he was seventeen, and in 1861 became a sub-lieutenant in the infantry. Georges Goursat ( – ), known as Sem, was a French caricature, caricaturist famous during the ''Belle Époque''. Life and works Youth (1863–1900) Georges Goursat was born and raised in an upper-middle-class family from Périgueux. The wealth inherited from his father at the age of 21 allowed him to sustain a gilded youth. In 1888 he self-published his first three albums of caricatures in Périgueux, signing some as "SEM", allegedly as a tribute to Amédée de Noé who signed his caricatures for ''Le Monde illustré'' as "Cham".
