Geography Loppersum is located in the province of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. Eemsdelta
Eemsdelta () is a municipality in the province of Groningen, Netherlands formed from the merger of Appingedam, Delfzijl and Loppersum. The municipality came into existence on 1 January 2021. Geography As of 2020, the areas encompassed by the municipality have a population of approximately 46 thousand people. The municipality is bordered by Het Hogeland to the west, Groningen to the southwest, Midden-Groningen to the south and Oldambt to the southeast. It consists of 32 main population centres, the largest of which are Appingedam (part of the Appingedam municipality), Delfzijl, Wagenborgen, Spijk (all part of the Delfzijl municipality), Loppersum and Middelstum (both part of the Loppersum municipality). Stedum
Stedum () is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Eemsdelta, about northeast of the city of Groningen. Stedum was a separate municipality until 1990, when it merged with Loppersum. The German municipality of Hohenhameln, which includes the German village of Stedum, was twinned with the Dutch municipality of Loppersum. History The village was first mentioned in the 10th or 11th century as ''Stedion'' and means "settlement near the (farmers) place". Stedum is a ''terp'' (artificial living village) with an elongated structure which developed during the early Middle Ages. The shape was partially a result of the former river Fivel. The church was built on the west side, and a ''borg'' on the northeastern side. The first church was constructed in the 9th or 10th century. Garrelsweer
Garrelsweer is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is a part of the municipality of Eemsdelta. History The village was first mentioned in 1057 as Gerleuiswert, and means "settled height of Gerlef (person)". Garrelsweer developed on a dike along the Delf river. In 1057, it was given market, minting and toll rights by Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor. During the Middle Ages, the village became overshadowed by neighbouring Loppersum. In 1424, the Delf was replaced by the , a canal from Groningen to Delfzijl. In 1568, during the Dutch Revolt, a battle was fought near Garrelsweer between Count Louis of Nassau and the Spanish Prince Charles de Ligne of Arenberg. The battle was undecided. Two days later, the fighting continued at Heiligerlee which became the first Dutch military victory, and therefore, the official beginning of the Eighty Years' War. 't Zandt
t Zandt () is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Eemsdelta. 't Zandt was a separate municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Loppersum. The municipality covered the villages 't Zandt, Zeerijp, Leermens, Eenum and Oosterwijwerd, and the hamlets Zijldijk, Kolhol, Korendijk and 't Zandstervoorwerk. History The village was first mentioned in 1257 as "in Sonde", and means sand. That year, the monks of started to a dike in order to ''polder'' the former Fivel estuary. The ''polder'' was completed in 1266, and a sluice was constructed in 1272. At the intersection of the new dike and the perpendicular older dike, a settlement appeared. Delfzijl
Delfzijl (; gos, Delfsiel) is a city and former municipality with a population of 25,651 in the province of Groningen (province), Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Delfzijl was a sluice between the Delf (canal), Delf and the Ems (river), Ems, which became fortified settlement in the 16th century. The fortifications were removed in the late 19th century. Ten Boer () is a village and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands, in the province of Groningen. The municipality had a population of in ; the village of Ten Boer has approximately 4,600 inhabitants. In 2019, it was merged into municipality of Groningen. History The village was first mentioned in 1301 as "conventum de Bure", and means "near the house". Ten Boer is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village on a grid structure. In 1301, a Benedictine monastery for nuns was established in Ten Boer. In 1485, it was incorporated into the monastery of Thesinge. Middelstum () is a village with a population of 2,419 in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Eemsdelta. Eemsmond (; en, Ems Mouth) is a former municipality with a population of 15,864 in the north of the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. History The municipality of Hefshuizen was established on 1 January 1979 by merging the municipalities of Uithuizen and Uithuizermeeden. Bedum
Bedum (; gos, Beem) is a former municipality and a town in the northeastern Netherlands. Populated by inhabitants in , Bedum is one of the larger of Groningen's several satellite towns. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of De Marne, Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. Bedum is the site of three supermarkets, several pubs, and a leaning church tower, dubbed "the leaning tower of Bedum". Footballer Arjen Robben was born in Bedum (23 January 1984). Slochteren
Slochteren () is a village and former municipality with a population of 15,546 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2018, Slochteren merged with Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Menterwolde, forming the municipality Midden-Groningen. The former municipality can be characterized as a chain of small villages dividing a mostly agricultural landscape. Having an agricultural background for at least a thousand years, the community houses for the most part commuters to nearby towns like Hoogezand, Groningen and Delfzijl.
