Ten Boer
Ten Boer () is a village and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands, in the province of Groningen. The municipality had a population of in ; the village of Ten Boer has approximately 4,600 inhabitants. In 2019, it was merged into municipality of Groningen. History The village was first mentioned in 1301 as "conventum de Bure", and means "near the house". Ten Boer is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village on a grid structure. In 1301, a Benedictine monastery for nuns was established in Ten Boer. In 1485, it was incorporated into the monastery of Thesinge. Around 1425, the , a canal from Groningen to Delfzijl, was dug and the village received its current shape. The Dutch Reformed church is the former monastery church, and dates from the 13th century. The church was modified in 1565. The tower was demolished around 1800, and in 1810, a ridge turret was placed on the roof instead. Ten Boer was home to 279 people in 1840. Thesinge
Thesinge (Gronings: ''Taisen'') is a village in the municipality of Groningen, in the Dutch province of Groningen. The Benedictine monastery of ''Germania'' was founded in Thesinge in 1205. History The village was first mentioned in 786 or 787 as Thelingi, and means "(monastery) of the people of Thiasa (person)". The Benedictine monastery Germania was founded in 1205 near the village. Thesinge is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village with a rectangular structure. The monastery was destroyed in 1584 during the Reformation. Most of the buildings were demolished 1629 except for the church. The St Felicitas Church of the monastery became the Dutch Reformed church. It was built in the 13th century, but extensively modified and rebuilt in 1786. The church was restored between 1972 and 1973. It was decommissioned in 1971, and is used to weddings. Bedum
Bedum (; gos, Beem) is a former municipality and a town in the northeastern Netherlands. Populated by inhabitants in , Bedum is one of the larger of Groningen's several satellite towns. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of De Marne, Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. Bedum is the site of three supermarkets, several pubs, and a leaning church tower, dubbed "the leaning tower of Bedum". Footballer Arjen Robben was born in Bedum (23 January 1984). Bedum has a railway station - Bedum railway station. The leaning tower Bedum's 36-metre tower of the St Walfridus church has been calculated as now leaning at a greater angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Slochteren
Slochteren () is a village and former municipality with a population of 15,546 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2018, Slochteren merged with Hoogezand-Sappemeer and Menterwolde, forming the municipality Midden-Groningen. The former municipality can be characterized as a chain of small villages dividing a mostly agricultural landscape. Having an agricultural background for at least a thousand years, the community houses for the most part commuters to nearby towns like Hoogezand, Groningen and Delfzijl. Remco Jelmer van der Schaaf (born 28 February 1979) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Club career Van der Schaaf was born in Ten Boer, Groningen. After playing youth football for VV Omlandia and TOP Oss, he began his professional career in 1997 at Vitesse Arnhem, where he spent part of the 1999–2000 season on loan at Fortuna Sittard. Van der Schaaf signed for PSV Eindhoven in 2002, and was injured in a 2004 UEFA Cup match by Titus Bramble of Newcastle United. Van der Schaaf re-signed for Vitesse in 2005, and in July 2008 he signed a three-year deal with Burnley, turning down a contract from Welsh side Cardiff City in the process. Winneweer is a small village in the municipalities of Eemsdelta and Groningen in the Dutch province of Groningen. The village was first mentioned in 1668 as "Winne-weer, een Logijs-plaets", and refers to an inn which was located near Garrelsweer, and is nowadays a pub. The etymology is unclear.
