Lollar–Wetzlar Railway
The Lollar–Wetzlar railway was a railway line in the German state of Hesse, connecting the towns of Lollar and Wetzlar via Lahnau. It was opened in 1878 as part of the Cannons Railway (''Kanonenbahn'') from Berlin to Metz, but was closed in 1983. History The 18.04 km long Lollar–Wetzlar line was built as a bypass for Gießen. The line separated in Lollar from the Main-Weser Railway coming from the north and ran directly to Wetzlar where the Cannons Railway continued over the Lahntal railway to the west. This work was built under the leadership of Julius Lehwald. The initial survey work for the line were carried out in 1872, construction began on 1 July 1875 and was completed in July 1878. The line was officially opened on 15 October 1878. This line allowed the Cannons Railway to avoid the Gießen rail node. Dill Railway
The Dill Railway (German: ''Dillstrecke'') is a 73 km-long double-track rail electrification, electrified railway line, which runs from Giessen in Hesse to Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia. Until 2002 InterRegio trains operated the connection to Düsseldorf, Norden, Lower Saxony, Norddeich, and Münster. Nowadays the line is only worked by regional trains, including diesel multiples of the DreiLänderBahn, but there is one exception. The EuroCity Line 112/113 from Siegen to Klagenfurt via Frankfurt, Stuttgart, München and Salzburg with a destination coach to Zagreb. This train starts every day from Siegen in the morning at 6:17 pm, the train from Klagenfurt arrives at 9:57 am at Siegen. The southern section between Haiger and Gießen was built by the Cologne-Minden Railway Company in 1862 as part of its line from Köln Messe/Deutz station, Deutz and is one of the List of the first German railways to 1870, oldest railways in Germany. Cannons Railway
The ''Kanonenbahn'' (literally "Cannons Railway") is a former German military strategic railway between Berlin and Metz via Güsten, Wetzlar, Koblenz and Trier. Metz is in Alsace-Lorraine, which was annexed by Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. Other railways, such as the Glan Valley Railway (''Glantalbahn''), built mainly for military strategic reasons, were also colloquially known as the ''Kanonenbahn'', but the link between Berlin and Metz is the best known of them. Lahntal Railway
The Lahntal railway (German: ''Lahntalbahn'') is a railway line between Niederlahnstein in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate to Wetzlar in Hesse. Its western terminus was originally in Oberlahnstein. Trains now mostly operate between Koblenz and Gießen. The line was opened by the Nassau Rhine and Lahn Railway Company and the Nassau State Railway between 1858 and 1863 and is one of the oldest railways in Germany. Route The railway follows the largely winding course of the valley of the Lahn river. It is only a few metres above the river’s surface and is characterised by numerous bridges and tunnels. It is therefore extremely scenic. As the line has never been fundamentally modernised, its numerous engineering structures, semaphore signals and accompanying telegraph lines have been preserved. Wetzlar Station
Wetzlar station is a through railway station in the city of Wetzlar in the German state of Hesse. The station, which serves Deutsche Bahn's Dill and Lahntal lines, constitutes (together with the adjacent bus station) Wetzlar's most important public transport node. History The first Wetzlar station, built in 1862 in the district of Niedergirmes, was an "island station" (german: Inselbahnhof), with the main station building built between the tracks. This building still stands. The current station was originally completed in January 1917 in the Art Nouveau style, but it was demolished in 1981 and rebuilt in the Modern style. Wetzlar
Wetzlar () is a city in the state of Hesse, Germany. It is the twelfth largest city in Hesse with currently 55,371 inhabitants at the beginning of 2019 (including second homes). As an important cultural, industrial and commercial center, the university town is one of the ten regional centers in the state of Hesse. Lahnau
Lahnau is a municipality in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis in Hesse, Germany, and lies about midway – about 6 km each way – between the towns of Wetzlar and Gießen. Geography Neighbouring communities Lahnau borders in the north on the community of Biebertal, in the east on the community of Heuchelheim (both in Gießen district), and in the south and west on the town of Wetzlar (Lahn-Dill-Kreis).
