Toto (band)
Toto is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1977. Toto combines elements of Pop music, pop, Rock music, rock, Soul music, soul, funk, hard rock, Rhythm and blues, R&B, blues, and jazz. Having released 14 studio albums and sold over 50 million records worldwide, the group has received several Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009. David Paich (keyboards, vocals) and Jeff Porcaro (drums) had played together as session musicians on several albums and formed the band; David Hungate (bass), Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals), Steve Porcaro (keyboards, vocals), and Bobby Kimball (vocals) were recruited before the release of the band's Toto (album), eponymous debut album in 1978. Bobby Kimball
Robert Troy Kimball (born March 29, 1947) is an American retired singer best known as longtime frontman of the rock band Toto from 1977 to 1984 and again from 1998 to 2008. He has also performed as a solo artist and session singer. History Early life Kimball was born in Orange, Texas but raised in nearby Vinton, Louisiana. (Vinton did not have a hospital.) He started singing as a child, dabbling on vocals and playing piano and acoustic guitar in a musical household throughout his youth, mostly covering and performing 1950s and 1960s R&B hits, 1800s traditional old-time music, and rare local swamp pop and Cajun folk songs typical of Louisiana. His parents were extremely supportive of his musical talents, devoting themselves to his desire to become a full-time professional musician as an adult. Tony Spinner
Tony Spinner (born June 9, 1963) is an American rock and blues singer and guitarist, best known for his collaborations with Toto and Paul Gilbert. Spinner, who toured with Toto from 1999 until their temporary hiatus in 2008, was personally selected by David Paich as a backup guitarist and backing vocalist and would perform lead vocals on the song " Stop Loving You," originally performed by former Toto member Joseph Williams. When Toto reformed in 2010, Williams rejoined the band. In fall 2010, Tony Spinner joined Paul Gilbert on his " Fuzz Universe" European tour. ''Mindfields'' is the tenth studio album (though counted as the 11th album overall — ''see Toto XIV)'' by the American rock band Toto. It was released in Europe and Japan in March 1999, followed by a US release on November 16, 1999. ''Mindfields'' saw the return of vocalist Bobby Kimball, who had departed the band in 1984 during recording sessions for the Isolation album. Reception The album received mixed reviews from critics. Michael Gallucci of AllMusic wrote: "Overlong, overwrought, and devoid of personality, this incredibly dull world-view update of Toto's crassly professional sound manages to pillage several cultures at once without contributing a single song worth remembering. The playing is tight—as you would expect from a bunch of studio session musicians—but all the skills in the world can't liven these 14 plodding tracks." Simon Phillips (born 6 February 1957) is an English jazz fusion and rock drummer, songwriter, and record producer, based in the United States. "Hold the Line" is a song included by American rock band Toto on its 1978 eponymous debut studio album. It was written by the band's keyboardist David Paich, and lead vocals were performed by Bobby Kimball. "Hold the Line" was released by Columbia Records as the lead single from the ''Toto'' album in September 1978, also being Toto's debut single. Mike Porcaro
Michael Joseph Porcaro (May 29, 1955 – March 15, 2015) was an American bass player known for his work with the rock band Toto. He retired from touring in 2007 as a result of being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He was the middle brother of Toto members Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro. Their father was jazz drummer-percussionist Joe Porcaro. Early life Mike Porcaro is the second of the three Porcaro brothers. The three brothers were taught drums by their father at his drum shop every weekend. Jeff said that he himself wasn't the best drummer, adding that Mike was a better player than him before he switched to bass, while Steve later took up piano before they moved to California. Jeff explained that when the brothers took guitar lessons, Mike took off at the instrument while Jeff gave up after three lessons, and since the family had only one drum kit and one bass, Mike was assigned the bass.
