Little Birch
Little Birch is a hamlet and civil parish in Herefordshire, England. It is approximately south from the city and county town of Hereford and north-west from the market town of Ross-on-Wye. The parish is significant for its Grade II* listed church, and Athelstan Wood, formerly anciently managed but now largely coniferised. History Little Birch is listed in the ''Domesday Book'' as a manor combined with Much Birch in the Hundred of Archenfield, and one of the smallest in the survey, with one Welshman and four lord's ploughlands. Lord in 1066 was Costelin, whose son became lord in 1086 under Tenant-in-chief and king William I. From at least before 1848 and at least to 1913, Little Birch was in the Southern division of Herefordshire and the Upper division of the Hundred of Wormelow and the Much Birch polling district. Wormelow Tump
Wormelow Tump is a village in Herefordshire, England, south of Hereford and north-west of Ross-on-Wye. Most of the village lies in the parish of Much Birch, but it extends west across the parish boundary – which here follows the A466 – into Much Dewchurch parish. The tump itself was a mound which local tradition holds was the burial place of King Arthur's son Amr. The tump was flattened to widen the road in 1896. Wormelow gave its name to a hundred. The Domesday Book mentions the custom that all citizens of Herefordshire who owned a horse were required to attend the meeting of all the hundreds, which took place every three years at Wormelow Tump. Money Order
A money order is a directive to pay a pre-specified amount of money from prepaid funds, making it a more trusted method of payment than a cheque. History The money order system was established by a private firm in Great Britain in 1792 and was expensive and not very successful. Around 1836 it was sold to another private firm which lowered the fees, significantly increasing the popularity and usage of the system. The Post Office noted the success and profitability, and it took over the system in 1838. Fees were further reduced and usage increased further, making the money order system reasonably profitable. The only draw-back was the need to send an advance to the paying post office before payment could be tendered to the recipient of the order. Hereford, Ross And Gloucester Railway
The Hereford, Ross and Gloucester Railway (also known as the Gloucester and Dean Forest Railway), was a railway which ran for linking Hereford and Gloucester, England, via Ross-on-Wye. Great Western Railway
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838 with the initial route completed between London and Bristol in 1841. Newport, Abergavenny And Hereford Railway
The Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Railway was a railway company formed to connect the places in its name. When it sought Parliamentary authorisation, it was denied the southern section, and obliged to use the Monmouthshire Railway between Pontypool and Newport. It opened on 6 December 1853, and was part of an important chain of lines between south-east Wales and Birkenhead; mineral traffic in both directions was dominant. The London and North Western Railway hoped to exploit the line to form a network in South Wales, but that aspiration was not fully realised, and in 1860 the NA&HR merged with other railways to form the West Midland Railway, which soon amalgamated with the Great Western Railway in 1863.
