Literato
Literato (foaled 18 January 2004) is a French Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After being undefeated in five relatively minor races as a two-year-old he emerged as one of the best colts of his generation in Europe in 2007, winning the Prix La Force, Prix Guillaume d'Ornano and Prix du Prince d'Orange in France before recording his biggest win when sent to England for the Champion Stakes. He ran poorly in two races as a four-year-old and was retired to stud. Background Literato is a small grey horse standing 15.2 hands high bred in France by B S H of Administrativa. He was sired by Kendor, whose wins included the Grand Critérium and the Poule d'Essai des Poulains before being retired to stud where his other winners included the Lockinge Stakes winner Keltos. Prix Du Prince D'Orange
The Prix du Prince d'Orange is a group-3 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September. History The event is named after William of Orange (1840–1879), the eldest son of William III of the Netherlands. The Prince became a member of the Jockey-Club de Paris in 1863, and took up racehorse ownership shortly before his death. The Prix du Prince d'Orange was established in 1882. It was originally open to horses aged three or older and contested at Longchamp over 2,400 metres. The race was abandoned throughout World War I, with no running from 1914 to 1918. The Champion Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres), and it is scheduled to take place as part of British Champions Day each year in October. History The event was established in 1877, and it was originally held at Newmarket. The inaugural running was won by Springfield. By the end of the century it had been won by five Classic winners. The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and the Champion Stakes was classed at the highest level, Group 1. Prix La Force
The Prix La Force is a Group 3 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles) at Longchamp in April. History The event is named in memory of the Duc de La Force, Bertrand Nompar de Caumont (1840–1909), a member of the Société d'Encouragement. It was established in 1910, and was initially open to horses aged three or four. Its original distance was 2,200 metres. It was later opened to older horses. The Prix La Force was restricted to three-year-olds in 1950. From this point it was contested over 2,000 metres. Keltos (horse)
Keltos (foaled 25 March 1998) is a French Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for his win in the 2002 Lockinge Stakes. After finishing second on his only appearance as a juvenile he won four races in 2001 including the Listed Prix de Pontarme and the Group Three Prix Perth. In the following spring he won the Prix du Muguet and defeated a top class-field in the Lockinge Stakes before being retired to stud. After suffering from low fertility he returned to racing in 2004 and won the Listed Prix Tantieme as well as being placed in several important races. In 2005 he won one minor race from starts and was retired from racing at the end of the season. He has had moderate success in his second spell as a breeding stallion.
