Railway Station
Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. In contrast to road transport, where the vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles (rolling stock) are directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Tracks usually consist of steel rails, installed on sleepers (ties) set in ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as "slab track", in which the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface. Rolling stock in a rail transport system generally encounters lower frictional resistance than rubber-tyred road vehicles, so passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. Great Western Railway Station
Great Western railway station is the 61st railway station on the Main Line (which runs between Colombo and Badulla), and is away from Colombo. It is located at the Great Western estate of Nuwara Eliya District and is situated above sea level. This railway station lies between the Watagoda and Randella railway stations. The station has two platforms with a second track as a siding loop. All the trains that run on the Main Line, including the Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains stop at the station. The railway station was constructed to service the Great Western Estate, a tea plantation in the foothills of the Great Western Mountain. The estate was originally established by J. A. Rossiter in 1866. In 1883 the estate was predominately a coffee plantation owned and operated by Dent Brothers & Co. Wattegama Railway Station ( si, වත්තේගම දුම්රිය ස්ථානය) is a railway station on the Matale railway line of Sri Lanka. It is the 62nd railway station on the line from Colombo Fort railway station and is located in the Kandy District in the Central Province. It is from the Colombo Fort Railway Station and from the Kandy Railway Station. The station was opened on 14 October 1880 following the construction of a branch line from Kandy to Matale. The station is served by Sri Lanka Railways and is the primary railway station in Kandy and one of the most significant in the central hills. Demodara Railway Station
Demodara railway station is the 76th and third last railway station on the Main Line, and is away from Colombo. It is located above mean sea level and from Badulla, the capital city of Uva Province. All the trains that run on the Main Line, including the Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains stop at the station. The station is most notable for its spiral rail line at this location, popularly known as the 'Demodara Loop'. The rail line passes under itself, going around the loop and emerging from a tunnel, which runs directly beneath the Demodara railway station. The rail loop is approximately long and the tunnel is in length. It is considered the only loop in the world with a railway station situated exactly over a tunnel at spiral loop. Bandarawela Railway Station
Bandarawela railway station is the 71st and eighth last railway station on the Main Line, and is away from Colombo. It is located above mean sea level and from the centre of Badulla, the capital city of Uva Province. All the trains that run on the Main Line, including the Podi Menike and Udarata Menike express trains stop at the station. The construction of the railway line between Haputale and Bandarawela commenced in 1887 but it wasn't until 1893 that work on the line was completed. Haputale Railway Station ( si, හපුතලේ දුම්රිය ස්ථානය, ta, ஹப்புடேல் ரயில் நிலையம்) is the 69th station on the Main Line. The station is located between Idalgashinna and Diyatalawa railway stations in Badulla District, Uva Province. It is located from Colombo Fort railway station at an elevation of above sea level.
