Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Ahead of the All-Ireland final, the captain is the first member of the team to shake the hand of dignitaries who may be attending the game, for example the president of the GAA or the president of Ireland. 2011 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2011 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 123rd staging of the All-Ireland championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The draw for the 2011 fixtures took place on 7 October 2010. The championship began on 14 May and ended on 4 September 2011. Tipperary were the defending champions. Kilkenny secured the title with a 2-17 to 1-16 defeat of Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. This was their 33rd All-Ireland title, their eighth in twelve championship seasons. Teams A total of fourteen teams will contest the championship, including thirteen teams from the 2010 championship and one promoted team from the 2010 Christy Ring Cup. Lough Lene Gaels GAA
Lough Lene Gaels (Irish: ''Gaeil Loch Léinn'') is a Gaelic Athletic Association club, based in Collinstown, County Westmeath, Ireland. Club history Lough Lene Gaels was founded as a hurling club late in 1969 as a result of an amalgamation between the Collinstown, Fore, Glenidan and Rickardstown hurling clubs. Their played first match in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Championship resulted in a 5-17 to 5-1 win over Delvin, July 1970. First victorious honour occurred in early 1972 resulting from a postponed 1971 Junior hurling league final. Raharney were defeated 4-10 to 2-3 on that final. First championship honour came in 1973 when the Junior title was won by defeating Castletown-Geoghegan 7-3 to 2-3. The awaited breakthrough at senior level arrived 1975 with vanquishing Raharney in the final. Tommy Doyle (Westmeath Hurler)
Thomas Doyle (born 16 January 1993) is an Irish hurler who plays as a full-back for the Westmeath senior team. He is the current captain of the team. Doyle made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he was selected for the Westmeath minor team. He played for two championship seasons with the minor team, before joining the Westmeath under-21 team. By this stage he had also joined the Westmeath senior team when he was added to the extended panel for the 2012 Walsh Cup. Since then he has become a regular member of the starting fifteen and has won one National League Division 2A medal. 2018 Joe McDonagh Cup
The 2018 Joe McDonagh Cup was the inaugural staging of the Joe McDonagh Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The fixtures were announced on 13 April 2018. The competition began on 5 May 2018. On 1 July 2018, Carlow won the title following a 2-26 to 1-24 defeat of Westmeath in the final. This was their second successive promotion within the various tiers of hurling, as they were also the 2017 Christy Ring Cup champions. Meath were relegated from the Joe McDonagh Cup after losing all of their group stage games. Antrim's Neil McManus was the competition's top scorer with 3-67. The 2017 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 130th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 23 April 2017 and ended on 3 September 2017. The draw for the championship was held on 13 October 2016 and was broadcast live on RTÉ2. Tipperary, the 2016 champions, were defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. Meath fielded a team in the championship for the first time since 2004. On 3 September 2017 Galway won the championship following a 0–26 to 2–17 defeat of Waterford in the All-Ireland final. Castletown Geoghegan GAA
Castletown Geoghegan is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Ireland. The club first fielded a championship team in 1920 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. In senior hurling Castletown Geoghegan compete annually in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Championship, which they have won fourteen times as of 2022. The club also competes in various other championships in all grades within Westmeath. History Beginnings The first record of hurling being played in Castletown Geoghegan dates back to 1911 when games were played in Loughlum. These were not on an organized basis but soon after a Kilkenny man named Mick Byrne who worked with CIÉ at Castletown Station brought his skill and knowledge of hurling to the area. Aonghus Clarke
Aonghus Clarke (born 1993) is an Irish hurler who plays as centre back for the Westmeath senior team. Born in Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Clarke first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Coláiste Mhuire CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Westmeath minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2012 championship. Clarke immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen. At club level Clarke is a two-time championship medallist with Castletown Geoghegan. Clarke's brother, Joe, also plays with Westmeath.
