Aonghus Clarke
Aonghus Clarke (born 1993) is an Irish hurler who plays as centre back for the Westmeath senior team. Born in Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Clarke first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Coláiste Mhuire CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Westmeath minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2012 championship. Clarke immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen. At club level Clarke is a two-time championship medallist with Castletown Geoghegan. Clarke's brother, Joe, also plays with Westmeath. Castletown Geoghegan GAA
Castletown Geoghegan is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Ireland. The club first fielded a championship team in 1920 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. In senior hurling Castletown Geoghegan compete annually in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Championship, which they have won fourteen times as of 2022. The club also competes in various other championships in all grades within Westmeath. History Beginnings The first record of hurling being played in Castletown Geoghegan dates back to 1911 when games were played in Loughlum. These were not on an organized basis but soon after a Kilkenny man named Mick Byrne who worked with CIÉ at Castletown Station brought his skill and knowledge of hurling to the area. The Westmeath County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae na hIarmhí) or Westmeath GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Westmeath. Castletown Geoghegan () is a village in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, and lies south west of Lough Ennell near the county town of Mullingar. Castletown was the seat of the Geoghegan family of the medieval Barony of Moycashel in County Westmeath. History The ''Geoghegan, Mac Eochagáin'' family are descended from Fiacha, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, Niall Naoi Noigíallach. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 125th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The draw for the 2012 fixtures took place on 6 October 2011. The championship began on 19 May 2012 and ended on 30 September 2012. Kilkenny were the defending champions and successfully retained their title following a 3–22 to 3–11 victory over Galway in a replay of the final. Teams A total of fourteen teams contested the championship, including all of the teams from the 2011 championship. There were no new teams entering the championship. Laois and Westmeath were the first teams to exit the 2011 championship, however, there was no relegation play-off. Both teams contested the 2012 championship. Joseph Clarke (born 1986) is an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder for the Westmeath senior team. Born in Castletown Geoghegan, County Westmeath, Clarke first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Westmeath minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. Clarke made his senior debut during the 2005 Christy Ring Cup. Since then he has won three Christy Ring Cup medals and one National League (Division 2) medal.
