Horse racing is an equestrian performance sport, typically involving two or more horses ridden by jockeys (or sometimes driven without riders) over a set distance for competition. It is one of the most ancient of all sports, as its basic premise – to identify which of two or more horses is the fastest over a set course or distance – has been mostly unchanged since at least classical antiquity. Horse races vary widely in format, and many countries have developed their own particular traditions around the sport. Dubai City Of Gold
The Dubai City of Gold is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually since 1998 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Given the nickname for the city of Dubai, the Group 2 race is open to Northern and Southern Hemisphere bred horses age four years and up. It is raced on tuf at a distance of 2400 meters (app. miles). Initially a conditions race, it was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2001 and then to Group 2 status in 2009. The Dubai Millennium Stakes, is a horse race for horses aged four and over, run at a distance of 2,000 metres (ten furlongs) on turf in February at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The Dubai Millennium Stakes was first contested in 2014 as a Listed race before being elevated to Group 3 class in 2016. It is named in honour of the racehorse Dubai Millennium. Burj Nahaar
The Burj Nahaar, is a horse race run over a distance of 1,600 metres (one mile) on dirt in March at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The race is named after the Burj Nahar, a fortified tower on Dubai's old city walls. The Burj Nahaar was first contested in 2002 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. It became a Listed race in 2005 and was elevated to Group 3 level a year later. The race was relocated to Meydan in 2010 where it was run on a synthetic Tapeta surface before reverting to dirt in 2015. The Al Shindagha Sprint, is a horse race for horses aged three and over, run at a distance of 1,200 metres (six furlongs) on dirt in late January or early February at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The race is named after Al Shindagha, a district in the city of Dubai. The Al Shindagha Sprint was first contested in 2000 on dirt at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. Zabeel Mile
The Zabeel Mile, is a horse race run over a distance of 1,600 metres (one mile) on turf in late February or early March at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The race is named after a locality in Western Dubai. Not related with New Zealand stallion Zabeel. It was first contested in 2007 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse before being transferred to Meydan in 2010. The Zabeel Mile began as a Listed race. The race was elevated to Group 3 level in 2009 and became a Group 2 event in 2011. UAE Derby
The UAE Derby is a Group 2 flat horse race in the United Arab Emirates for three-year-old thoroughbreds run over a distance of 1,900 metres (approximately 9.5 furlongs) on dirt at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. It takes place annually during the Dubai World Cup Night on the last Saturday in March. It was first run in 2000 and attained Group 2 status two years later. The distance of the race was increased to 2,000 metres (10 furlongs) in 2002, before reverting to 1,800 metres in 2004, and increased again to 1,900 meters in 2010. The race is open to both Northern and Southern Hemisphere three-year-olds. The UAE Derby currently offers a purse of US$2.5 million. From 2013, the race receives Kentucky Derby points and is now considered a major preparatory race for the Kentucky Derby. The Blue Point Sprint formerly Meydan Sprint, is a horse race run over a distance of 1,000 metres (five furlongs) on turf in February at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. It was first contested in 2012. The Meydan Sprint became a Listed race in 2013. The race was elevated to Group 3 level in 2013 and became a Group 2 event in 2019. Since 2022, it has been run as the Blue Point Sprint. Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 2
The Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 2, is a horse race run over a distance of 1,900 metres (1 mile, one and a half furlongs) on dirt in February at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. It is the second of three races in the Al Maktoum Challenge series which serve as trial races for the Dubai World Cup. It was first run in 1994 on dirt at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. It was transferred to Meydan in 2010 where it was run on the synthetic Tapeta Footings surface. In 2015 the synthetic surface at Meydan was replaced by a dirt track. The race was originally run over 2,000 metres and was run over 2,400 metres in 1996 before the distance was reduced to 1,800 metres in 1997. The current distance was established when the race moved to Meydan in 2010. The race began as an ungraded stakes race before attaining Listed status in 1996.
