Coach (sports)
A sports coach is a person coaching in sport, involved in the direction, instruction and training of a sports team or athlete. History The original sense of the word ''coach'' is that of a horse-drawn carriage, deriving ultimately from the Hungarian city of Kocs where such vehicles were first made. Students at the University of Oxford in the early nineteenth century used the slang word to refer to a private tutor who would drive a less able student through his examinations just like horse driving. Britain took the lead in upgrading the status of sports in the 19th century. For sports to become professionalized, "coacher" had to become established. It gradually professionalized in the Victorian era and the role was well established by 1914. Colin Francis 'Col' Deane (11 July 1900 – 10 December 1952) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Alan Killigrew
Robert "Alan" Killigrew (27 January 1918 – 10 June 2001) was an Australian rules footballer who went on to a celebrated career as senior coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL), South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and West Australian National Football League (WANFL). Playing career Killigrew (163 cm or 5 ft 4in) was a physically small man but an effective rover in 78 matches with the St Kilda Football Club from 1938 to 1941 and 1943 to 1945. Originally from Murtoa, he was voted club champion in 1940. Coaching career After his playing career was over Killigrew moved to Ballarat, where he managed a pub and coached Ballarat East and Golden Point. In 1956 he moved back to Melbourne to coach the St Kilda Football Club. Les Foote
Leslie Roy Foote (20 August 1924 – 11 April 2006) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League. Football career A local lad, and recruited from the North Melbourne Colts, Foote played his first match with the North Melbourne Football Club in 1941 at just 16 years of age. He was able to kick equally well with both feet, and his ability to play close to the ground meant that he was not only a brilliant ball player, but was also had an outstanding ability to control the ball in packs. He was an excellent mark. He was famous for his baulking and dodging skills (skills which he claimed to have honed "by walking through the crowded city footpaths, dodging and weaving through the oncoming people") and his courageous style of play. Fred Green (footballer)
Frederick John Green (6 March 1921 – 7 January 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Although he was not as tall as other ruckmen, Green was an effective knock ruckman during his career and also spent some time as a defender. He played in Essendon's losing 1941 Grand Final team and left the club in 1944 due to Naval commitments. Stationed in Canberra, Green captained the Navy side which competed in the CANFL and led them to the 1944 premiership. He continued playing in 1945 and won a Mulrooney Medal as the league's 'Best and fairest' player. Green returned to Essendon in 1946 before crossing to St Kilda the following season. Fred Froude
Frederick Ernest Froude (3 July 1910 – 16 June 1978) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and coached St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Although Froude played most of his career as a half back flanker, he started as a forward and kicked 30 goals in the 1931 VFL season. Hugh Thomas (coach)
Hugh Thomas (died 18 December 1976) was an Australian rules football coach who coached St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Thomas served initially as an assistant coach to Jock McHale at Collingwood, in what was a successful era for the club. Jack 'Cracker' Knight (21 November 1912 – 17 July 1976) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and both played for and coached St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
