Gwynedd
Gwynedd (; ) is a county and preserved county (latter with differing boundaries; includes the Isle of Anglesey) in the north-west of Wales. It shares borders with Powys, Conwy County Borough, Denbighshire, Anglesey over the Menai Strait, and Ceredigion over the River Dyfi. The scenic Llŷn Peninsula and most of Snowdonia National Park are in Gwynedd. Bangor is the home of Bangor University. As a local government area, it is the second largest in Wales in terms of land area and also one of the most sparsely populated. A majority of the population is Welsh-speaking. Ysgol Tryfan
Ysgol Tryfan is a bilingual (Welsh - English) comprehensive school for pupils aged 11–18, situated in Bangor, Gwynedd. 471 pupils were enrolled at the school in 2022. The majority of pupils live in Bangor, with a large proportion coming from the surrounding towns and villages, including Llanfairfechan, Bethesda, Y Felinheli and Menai Bridge. The school shares the same catchment area of primary schools as Ysgol Friars. On average, around 34% of pupils from primary schools situated in Bangor transfer to Ysgol Tryfan. Welsh is the school's administrative and official language. According to the latest Estyn inspection report carried out in 2019, 64% of pupils come from Welsh-speaking homes. Coleg Menai (meaning: ''Menai College'') is a further education college located in Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales. The college also has campuses in Parc Menai, Llangefni, Caernarfon and Holyhead. The college provides a range of academic and vocational courses including A levels, Apprenticeships, English for Speakers of Other Languages programmes and Access courses. Coleg Harlech
Coleg Harlech was a residential adult education college for mature students in Harlech, Gwynedd, later on part of Adult Learning Wales - Addysg Oedolion Cymru. History It was Wales' only long-term, mature-student residential education college and was established in 1927 by Thomas Jones, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet under four prime ministers including David Lloyd George and Stanley Baldwin, to continue the work of Workers' Educational Association in a residential environment, with Ben Bowen Thomas as its first warden. Plas Wernfawr was acquired at a knock-down price from a seller sympathetic to the project to be the base for the college. Starting with just six students, mostly from the South Wales Coalfield area, numbers increased to 30 in the 1930s, 70 in the 1960s, serving the whole of Wales. Ysgol Y Moelwyn
Blaenau Ffestiniog is a town in Gwynedd, Wales. Once a slate mining centre in historic Merionethshire, it now relies much on tourists, drawn for instance to the Ffestiniog Railway and Llechwedd Slate Caverns. It reached a population of 12,000 at the peak development of the slate industry, but fell with the decline in demand for slate. The population of the community, including the nearby village Llan Ffestiniog, was 4,875 in the 2011 census: the fourth most populous in Gwynedd after Bangor, Caernarfon and Llandeiniolen. The population not including Llan is now only about 4,000. Etymology and pronunciation The meaning of Blaenau Ffestiniog is "uplands of Ffestiniog". Ysgol Y Berwyn
Ysgol y Berwyn is a high-school situated in the town of Bala, in Gwynedd, north Wales. According to the 2013 Estyn report, 79% of pupils are from Welsh-speaking homes. In 2017, 80% of pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grades A*-C. In September 2019, a new 3-19-year-old school opened on site under the name 'Ysgol Godre'r Berwyn' ("Berwyn Lower School"). History Rev Edmund Meyricke founded a free grammar school at Bala, then in Merionethshire, in 1712. It was originally intended for poor boys. Some sources put the foundation date as 1713–4. Meyricke was Chancellor of St Davids Cathedral and diocese and therefore able to endow the new school with £15, and 5 acres (2 hectares) of land near the town, worth a rentcharge of £15 pa. Rev Thomas Charles (1755–1814), whose statue stands outside the school, was an advocate of foreign missionary work, proselytising the gospel with the British and Foreign Bible Society which he had founded. Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn
Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn is a bilingual coeducational secondary school for pupils aged between 11 and 16 years. It is situated in Tywyn, Gwynedd. As of 2018, around 19% of pupils come from Welsh-speaking homes. History It was opened as 'Towyn Intermediate School' in 1894 in a building called Brynarfor (formerly a private school called the Towyn Academy and then Brynarvor Hall School). Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen is a bilingual Comprehensive school, comprehensive secondary school for pupils aged 11–18. The school is situated in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, Wales. The school was established in 1894, the first to be built under the ''Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889'', which was heavily influenced by the educator Hugh Owen (educator), Sir Hugh Owen, after whom the school was named.
