Protected Area
Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved. Generally speaking though, protected areas are understood to be those in which human presence or at least the exploitation of natural resources (e.g. firewood, non-timber forest products, water, ...) is limited. The term "protected area" also includes marine protected areas, the boundaries of which will include some area of ocean, and transboundary protected areas that overlap multiple countries which remove the borders inside the area for conservation and economic purposes. Akaroa Marine Reserve
The Akaroa Marine Reserve is a marine reserve covering an area of at the entrance to the Akaroa Harbour in New Zealand. It was approved in 2013 after a lengthy campaign, and established in 2014. History Forest and Bird carried out exploratory dives in the Akaroa Harbour in 1990. The Akaroa Harbour Marine Protection Society formal proposed the establishment of a marine reserve in 1996. Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson declined the application for the reserve in 2010 on the grounds that it would adversely affect recreation fishing. The decision was challenged in the High Court and was quashed in a 2012 ruling. In terms of actual numbers the two separate consultation processes for the application had attracted more support than opposition. In April 2013 Conservation Minister Nick Smith announced the approval of the reserve but at the reduced size of 475 ha. First State National Monument
First State National Historical Park is a National Park Service unit which lies primarily in the state of Delaware but which extends partly into Pennsylvania in Chadds Ford. Initially created as First State National Monument by President Barack Obama under the Antiquities Act on March 25, 2013, the park was later redesignated as First State National Historical Park by Congress. Description The park covers the early colonial history of Delaware and the role Delaware played in the establishment of the nation, leading up to it being the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Great Blue Heron Provincial Park
Great Blue Heron Provincial Park is a recreational park in the central region of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan in the boreal forest ecozone of Canada. It is adjacent to the eastern boundary of Prince Albert National Park, about north of the city of Prince Albert. The provincial park was established in 2013 from two pre-existing provincial recreation sites – Emma Lake (Murray Point) and Anglin Lake Recreation Sites – and the addition of a large tract of Crown land. Great Blue Heron Provincial Park encompasses the entirety of Oscar Lake, most of Anglin Lake, the northern portion of Emma Lake, and the very northern tip of Christopher Lake. The eastern slopes of Waskesiu Hills are in the western side of the park. Access to the park is from Highway 953. Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park is a National Park Service unit in the U.S. state of Maryland. It commemorates the life of former enslaved Harriet Tubman, who became an activist in the Underground Railroad prior to the American Civil War. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument was created by President Barack Obama under the Antiquities Act on March 25, 2013. Opémican National Park
The parc national d'Opémican is a national park of Quebec ( Canada) located south of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, between Laniel and Témiscaming. The park is in size and was established on 19 December 2013. It ensures the protection of the characteristic landscape of the Southern Laurentians. Geography This park located in the natural region of the southern Laurentians is bordered on both sides by lakes Timiskaming and Kipawa. Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument
The Rio Grande del Norte National Monument is an approximately area of public lands in Taos County, New Mexico, proclaimed as a national monument on March 25, 2013, by President Barack Obama under the provisions of the Antiquities Act. It consists of the Rio Grande Gorge and surrounding lands, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The monument includes two BLM recreation areas, a portion of the Rio Grande designated as a Wild and Scenic River, and the Red River Wild and Scenic River. On March 12, 2019, the John D. San Juan Islands National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located in the Salish Sea in the state of Washington. The monument protects archaeological sites of the Coast Salish peoples, lighthouses and relics of early European American settlers in the Pacific Northwest, and biodiversity of the island life in the region. Tursujuq National Park
Tursujuq National Park is a Provincial Park of Quebec, Canada. Its creation was announced by the Province of Quebec on December 14, 2012, and officially established on July 18, 2013. Located on the east side of Hudson Bay near the Inuit village of Umiujaq, the park is one of North America's largest, with an area of 26,106.7 km2 (6.45 million acres). It is managed by the Kativik Regional Government, which encompasses most of the Nunavik region of Quebec. The Clearwater Lakes, created by twin earth impacts, lie within the park, as do Richmond Gulf and the watershed of the Nastapoka River. The river hosts a population of landlocked freshwater harbour seals and salmon, and its mouth is a sanctuary for beluga whales. Waitawa Regional Park
Waitawa Regional Park is a regional park situated on the coast of Tamaki Strait, east of Auckland, New Zealand. It is located in Franklin in the Auckland Region, near Kawakawa Bay and Clevedon, about from central Auckland. The park was one of Auckland's first recreational parks, designed specifically for active recreational activities such as mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking and disc golf. One of the beaches is part of the Te Ara Moana Kayak Trail, while another will be a home base for marine education. The land was purchased in 2004 by the former Auckland Regional Council and has been managed as a regional park by Auckland Council since 2014.
