List Of People Executed In Alabama
The following is a list of people executed by the U.S. state of Alabama since 1983. All of the 70 people (69 men and 1 woman) have been executed at the Holman Correctional Facility, near Atmore, Alabama. All executions since December 2002 have been by lethal injection. In 2021, the Alabama Department of Corrections announced it had constructed a facility at Holman to carry out executions by means of nitrogen hypoxia. Prior to 1983, an 18-year moratorium on executions was observed under the direction of the Supreme Court of the United States. Don Siegelman
Donald Eugene Siegelman ( ; born February 24, 1946) is a former American politician, lawyer and convicted felon who was the 51st governor of Alabama from 1999 to 2003. A member of the Democratic Party, as of , Siegelman is the last Democrat, as well as the only Catholic, to serve as Governor of Alabama. Siegelman is the only person in Alabama's history to be elected to serve in all four of the top statewide elected offices: Secretary of State, Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor and Governor. Walter Moody
Walter Leroy Moody Jr. (March 24, 1935 – April 19, 2018) was an American convicted murderer who was sentenced to death and executed in Alabama for the 1989 letter bomb murder of Robert S. Vance, a U.S. federal judge serving on the Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. When Moody was executed by lethal injection in April 2018, he became the oldest death row inmate to be executed since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Robert Melson (murderer)
On April 16, 1994, three employees were shot and killed and a fourth employee was seriously injured at a Popeyes restaurant in Gadsden, Alabama. The perpetrators, Robert Bryant Melson (June 5, 1971 – June 8, 2017) and Cuhuatemoc Hinricky Peraita (born May 19, 1976), robbed the restaurant of over $2,100, led the four employees into a freezer, and then shot all four of them. Melson was sentenced to death for the crime and Peraita received a life sentence; however, he was later sentenced to death for killing another inmate in prison. Melson was executed in 2017 and Peraita remains on death row. Andrew Lackey
Andrew Reid Lackey (October 29, 1983 – July 25, 2013) was a prisoner executed for the October 31, 2005 murder of Charles Newman, an eighty-year-old World War II veteran. Lackey became the first person executed by the state of Alabama since October 20, 2011; executions had been partly slowed because of a legal dispute over the drugs being used. No further executions would occur in Alabama until the January 2016 execution of Christopher Brooks. Murder and arrest Lackey broke into Newman's Limestone County home on Halloween night in 2005. Thomas Warren Whisenhant (January 29, 1947 – May 27, 2010) was an American serial killer who murdered at least four women between 1963 and 1976 in Mobile County, Alabama. James Hubbard (murderer)
James Barney Hubbard (March 7, 1930 – August 5, 2004) was an American convicted murderer who was sentenced to death by the state of Alabama in 1977 for the murder of 62-year-old Lillian Montgomery, whom Hubbard had been living with following his release from prison. On January 10, 1977, then-46-year-old Hubbard called police to report a shooting at Montgomery's home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, alleging that Montgomery had shot herself. Hubbard, who had previously served a 20-year sentence for a different murder, was subsequently convicted of Montgomery's murder and sentenced to death.
