Vasco Martins
Vasco Martins is a Cape Verdean musician and composer. Born in Queluz, Portugal, in 1956, he lives now in Calhau, Cape Verde. Biography Self-taught, he began his studies in 1974. He was a member of the band Colá in 1976, but then went to Portugal where he studied with Fernando Lopes Graça and later to France to pursue his musical education with Henri-Claude Fantapié. In 1979 he recorded his first LP. He returned to Cape Verde, and it is there that he has created most of his work as a composer and instrumentist, but also as musicologist and producer, he organized and founded the Baía das Gatas Music Festival along with his friends in 1984, the first music festival in the nation. He released more albums including ''Quinto Mundo'' (1989), ''Eternal Cycle'' (1995), ''Memórias Atlânticas'' (''Memories from the Atlantic'') (1998) and ''Lunário Perpétio'' (2001). Aguinaldo Fonseca
Aguinaldo Fonseca (22 September 1922; Mindelo, Cape Verde – 24 January 2014; Lisbon, Portugal) was a Cape Verdean poet. Biography Aguinaldo Fonseca was born in Mindelo, capital of the island of São Vicente on 22 September 1922. Aguinaldo Fonseca moved to Lisbon in 1945 and published several poems in different Portuguese journals. He first collaborated on the journal '' Claridade'' in 1945 and later on the seminary '' Mundo Literário'' (''World of Literature'') (1946-1948). He was later known as "the forgotten poet", even they were published in the "Linha do Horizonte" collection in 1951, seven years later, reunited in a selection of poems in a cultural supplement "Notícias de Cabo Verde", he portrayed Michel Laban, an Algerian born French investigator who studied in Lusophony literature, that author died in Paris in December 2008. Carlos Andrade
Carlos Eduardo Fernandes Vieira de Andrade (born April 27, 1978) is a former Portuguese basketball player who played as a small forward. Andrade played college basketball in the United States, and had brief spells in Germany and Spain. He is the younger brother of former WNBA player, Mery Andrade, who competed for the Cleveland Rockers and the Charlotte Sting. Epifânia de Freitas Silva Ramos Évora, better known as Dona Tututa or Tututa Évora (January 6, 1919 – January 26, 2014) was a Cape Verdean composer and a pianist. She is considered one of Cape Verde's legendary figure, she was the author of several songs including ''Grito d' Dor'', ''Sentimento'' (''Sentiment''), ''Mãe Tigre'' (''Mother of the Tiger'') and ''Vida Torturada'' (''Tortured Life''). Antoninho Travadinha
António Vicente Lopes (d. 1987), better known as Antoninho Travadinha was one of the major autodidactic musicians of Cape Verde originated from Janela in Paúl the island of Santo Antão. He performed the popular dances when he was only nine years old, and made himself internationally famous when he became forty, by the time he undertook a tournée in Portugal. Tcheka (Manuel Lopes Andrade; born in Ribeira da Barca, Santiago, Cape Verde, on July 20, 1973) is a Cape Verdean singer, songwriter and guitarist, who is well known for his work in transposing the traditional genre batuque to the electro-acoustic guitar. Biography Tcheka grew up in a musical family. By age 14, Tcheka began playing with his famous violinist father, Nho Raul Andrade, at local festivals, weddings and baptisms. By the time Tcheka reached 15, he began developing his own style, incorporating the genre batuque with his guitar. As a young man, Tcheka left his rural home and went to live in the capital, Praia. Eugénio de Paula Tavares (born 18 October 1867 in the island of Brava; died 1 June 1930 in Vila Nova Sintra) was a Cape Verdean poet. He is known through his famous poems (''mornas''), mostly written in the Creole of Brava. Biography Eugénio de Paula Tavares was born on the island of Brava in October 1867 to Francisco de Paula Tavares and Eugénia Roiz Nozzolini Tavares. His family is mainly descended from Santarém, Portugal. He was baptized at the Saint John the Baptist (São João Baptista) church in Brava. A few years later, his father starved to death and he was adopted by José and Eugénia Martins de Vera Cruz. Armando Zeferino Soares, (1920 in São Nicolau, Cape Verde – April 3, 2007) was a Capeverdean composer, author of the famous song ''Sodade''. He was born in Praia Branca in the island of São Nicolau and worked there as a salesman. He had several disputes due to the authorship of ''Sodade'' with other composers, including Amândio Cabral and Luís Morais. Fernando Aguilar Quejas (April 30, 1922 in Praia, Cape Verde – October 28, 2005 in Lisbon, Portugal) was a singer and a songwriter of Cape Verde. Paul Jerrod Pena (January 26, 1950 – October 1, 2005) was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist of Cape Verdean descent. His music from the first half of his career touched on Delta blues, jazz, morna, flamenco, folk and rock and roll.
