Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Léopold De Borman
Léopold de Borman (21 March 1909 – 9 March 1979) was a Belgian tennis player of the 1930s. Born in Ixelles (French, ) or ( Dutch, ), is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. Located to the south-east of Brussels' city centre, it is geographically bisected by the City of Brussels. De Borman won Belgium's national singles championships three years in a row from 1929 to 1931. Filip Dewulf
Filip Dewulf (born 15 March 1972) is a former professional male tennis player from Belgium. In his career, he won two ATP Tour singles titles and one title in doubles. In 1997 he reached the semifinals of the French Open, his best singles result ever and the first Belgian tennis player (male or female) to reach the semi-final at a Grand Slam tournament. He defeated Cristiano Caratti, Fernando Meligeni, Albert Portas, Àlex Corretja and Magnus Norman before he was defeated in four sets by the eventual champion, Gustavo Kuerten. This was, according to Roland Garros itself, the best performance that a qualifier has performed at a French Open, and only the third time in Grand Slam history that a qualifier had reached a semi-final. Karel Demuynck
Karel Demuynck (born 21 March 1965) is a Belgian former professional tennis player. A Limburg native, Demuynck featured in four Davis Cup ties for Belgium. On his debut in 1985 he won a reverse singles which gave Belgium the tie against Bulgaria. His only other win came in his final appearance in 1988 when he defeated Hungary's Ferenc Csepai in a relegation playoff which Belgium ultimately lost. Demuynck competed in the main draw of the Brussels Indoor on five occasions during the 1980s and twice made the second round, with wins over Mark Dickson in 1986 and Xavier Daufresne in 1988. Johan de Preter (born 19 April 1962) is a Belgian former professional tennis player. Active in the 1980s, de Preter is a native of Mechelen and played two years of collegiate tennis for the University of Louisiana. His professional career included an occasional ATP Challenger main draw appearance and he reached a best singles world ranking of 453. He appeared for the Belgium Davis Cup team in a 1987 tie against Switzerland in Lugano, then in 1991 and 1992 served as the team's non-playing captain. Johan De Muynck (tennis)
Johan De Muynck (born 30 May 1948 in Sleidinge, East Flanders) is a former Belgian professional road racing cyclist who raced from 1971 to 1983. The highlight of his career was his overall win in the 1978 Giro d'Italia. He was an outstanding climber. Other Grand Tour highlights include a very strong performance in the closely contested 1976 Giro d'Italia where he held the Maglia Rosa until the final time trial finishing on the podium in 2nd just nineteen seconds behind Felice Gimondi. He also rode well in the 1980 and 1981 editions of the Tour de France where he finished 4th and 7th respectively.
