The International Programme for the Development of Communication is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) programme aimed at strengthening the development of mass media in developing countries. Background On December 10, 1948, Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as Resolution 217 A (III). It stated that "''Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.''" IPDC-UNESCO Prize For Rural Communication
The IPDC-UNESCO Prize for Rural Communication is awarded by the UNESCO-sponsored International Programme for the Development of Communication. Its aim is to recognize initiatives for improving communication in rural communities, mainly in developing countries. The prize was established in 1985 by the Executive Board of UNESCO and consists of a sum of US$20,000. It is awarded to no more than two winners every two years. Winners The winner of the 1985 Prize was the Kheda Communication Project. The prize was won in 1999 by Radio Tanzania, and in 2003 by Radio Toco of Trinidad & Tobago. The Nari Shakti Puraskar is an annual award given by the Ministry of Women and Child Development of the Government of India to individual women or to institutions that work towards the cause of women empowerment.
