All-Ireland Under-20 Hurling Championship
The GAA Hurling Under-20 All-Ireland Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling Under-20 All-Ireland Championship) is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition for male players between the ages of 17 and 20 in Ireland. The championship was contested as the All-Ireland Under-21 Championship between 1964 and 2018 before changing to an under-20 age category from 2019. The final, currently held on the fourth Sunday in August, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during the summer months, and the results determine which team receives the James Nowlan Cup. The 1964 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship was the inaugural staging of the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship. The championship began on 29 March 1964 and ended on 4 October 1964. Tipperary won the title after defeating Wexford 8-9 to 3-1 in the final. Teams A total of eighteen teams entered the inaugural under-21 championship, however, there was a lop-sides nature to the competition due to the provincial structure. Galway, who had played in the Munster province at senior and minor levels since 1959, joined the other six traditional Munster teams and competed in the southern championship. Nine of the Leinster counties, including Louth, more notable as a Gaelic football stronghold, contested the eastern province. The 1966 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship was the third staging of the All-Ireland Under-21 Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1964. The championship began on 27 March 1966 and ended on 3 November 1966 Wexford entered the championship as the defending champions. The All-Ireland final, the only one to have gone to two replays, was eventually decided on 3 November 1966 at Croke Park in Dublin, between Cork and Wexford, in what was their first ever championship meeting. Cork won the match by 9-09 to 5-09 to claim their first championship title. Cork's Charlie McCarthy and Seánie Barry were the championship's top scorers. The 1965 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship was the second staging of the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship. The championship began on 28 March 1965 and ended on 12 September 1965. Wexford won the title after defeating Tipperary 3-7 to 1-4 in the final. Teams A total of eighteen teams entered the under-21 championship, the same number as the previous year, however, there was a difference in the composition. In Munster, Kerry declined to field a team in spite of a spirited display against Galway the previous year. In Leinster, Carlow and Louth made way for Meath and Wicklow. John Dillon (hurler)
John Dillon (14 September 1943 – 23 June 2019) was an Irish hurler who played for Tipperary Senior Championship club Roscrea. He played for the Tipperary senior hurling team for one season, during which time he usually lined out as a right corner-back. Dillon began his hurling career at club level with Roscrea. After enjoying much success in the minor and under-21 grades, he eventually broke onto the club's senior team. He enjoyed his first success at senior level when the club won the North Tipperary Championship in 1968. Dillon later captained Roscrea to the 1968 Tipperary Senior Championship title before winning a second title in 1969. At inter-county level, Dillon was part of the Tipperary minor team that lost back-to-back All-Ireland finals in 1960 and 1961 before later winning an All-Ireland Championship with the under-21 team in 1964. Francis Loughnane
Francis Loughnane (born 1945) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a wing-forward for the Tipperary senior team. Loughnane made his first appearance for the team during the 1968 championship and became a regular player over the course of the following decade. During that time he won one All-Ireland winner's medal, one Munster winner's medal, one National League winner's medal and three All-Star awards. At club level, Loughnane is an All-Ireland medalist with Roscrea. In addition to this he has also won two Munster club winners' medals and six county championship winners' medals. Michael "Babs" Keating (born 17 April 1944) is an Irish former hurler and Gaelic footballer who played as a forward for the Tipperary senior teams. Born in Ardfinnan, County Tipperary, Keating first played competitive Gaelic games during his schooling at CBS High School Clonmel. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor teams in both codes, before later joining the under-21 sides. He joined the senior football panel during the 1960 championship before being added to the senior hurling panel four years later. Keating was a regular member of the starting fifteen on both teams, and won two All-Ireland medals, four Munster medals and two National Hurling League medals. Mick Roche
Michael Roche (8 October 1943 – 7 December 2016) was an Irish hurler whose league and championship career with the Tipperary senior team spanned twelve seasons from 1963 to 1974. He is regarded as one of the greatest centre-backs of all time, in spite of spending much of playing career in his favoured position of midfield. Born near Carrickbeg, County Tipperary, Roche was raised in a household that had a strong association with Gaelic games. His father was a founder-member of the Carrick Davins club and had played Gaelic football for Tipperary.
