When the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out between China and Japan in 1937, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University merged to form Changsha Temporary University in Changsha and later National Southwestern Associated University (Lianda) () in Kunming and Mengzi, in Southwest China's Yunnan Province. Kunming Metro, or Kunming Rail Transit, is a rapid transit system in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. With a population of just over 3 million people, Kunming was one of the largest cities in China without a metro system before its construction. The system currently consists of 6 lines. Background The streets of Kunming have long been congested, and as such there have been talks of a subway system since the late 1990s. A 2006 proposal would have seen construction start in 2008 with a north-south line and an east-west line. The current rapid transit system was first announced in 2009, with construction scheduled to start later that year. The proposed routes would not only serve commuters in Kunming city centre, but would help encourage development to the city's southeast. Kunming (; ), also known as Yunnan-Fu, is the capital and largest city of Yunnan province, China. It is the political, economic, communications and cultural centre of the province as well as the seat of the provincial government. Kunming North railway station (昆明北站, ''Kūnmíng Běi Zhàn'') is an old railway station in Panlong District, Kunming, the capital of China's Yunnan Province. It was the terminal of the metre gauge Kunming–Hai Phong Railway, but now only sees very limited service. French Construction Built by the French in the early 20th century, the Kunming–Hai Phong Railway runs from Kunming to Hekou on Vietnamese border, and then continues to Vietnam.
