Li Xintian (writer)
Li Xintian (; January 1929 – 3 July 2019) was a Chinese novelist best known for his novels ''The Sparkling Red Star'' and ''Two Little Fighters''. Biography Li was born in Suining County, Jiangsu Province, in January 1929. He started to publish works in 1953. His first stage play, ''Little Eagle'', was published in 1961. That same year, his novellas ''Two Little Fighters'' was published. This was made into a phenomenally successful film in 1978. After graduating from East China Military and Political University, he joined the People's Liberation Army, becoming a civilian cadre in Jinan Military Region. His most influential work ''The Sparkling Red Star'' was published in 1970, and was adapted into a successful film. In 1979 he joined the China Writers Association. He died in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong province, on July 3, 2019. Suining County, Jiangsu
Suining County () is under the administration of Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, China; it is the southernmost county-level division of Xuzhou and borders the prefecture-level cities of Suqian to the east and Suzhou of Anhui to the south and west. History Suining basically was a part of former Suiling () county by the Han. The seat of the Suiling was relocated to present-day Suining during the Three Kingdoms, and Suiling was merged into Suqian later. In 1218, it became a separate county seated at the old walled city of Suqian, and named "Suining" (literally: Bring peace to the Sui basin). The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the principal military force of the People's Republic of China and the armed wing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Jinan Military Region
The Jinan Military Region was a PLA Military Region located in the east of the People's Republic of China, covering the Shandong and Henan Provinces, which also formed military districts. It appears that Yang Dezhi was one of the first commander of the Jinan MR, from 1958. It was considered a strategic reserve. It includes some of the area previously within the Wuhan Military Region, disbanded in 1985–88. The 5th Air Corps was established in Weifeng, Shandong Province, in 1952, possibly from the disbanding 11th Corps, but was moved to Hangzhou in the Nanjing Military Region by 1954. China Writers Association or Chinese Writers Association (CWA, ) is a subordinate people's organization of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC). Founded in July 1949, the organization was initially named the China National Literature Workers Association. In September 1953, it was renamed the China Writers Association. The association's leadership was purged shortly after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. In April 2012, the organization changed its translated name to China Writers Association. ''Sparkling Red Star'' is a 1974 Chinese film and one of the very few films produced in China during the Cultural Revolution. Co-directed by Li Jun and Li Ang, the film is a mix between a war film, a children's film and a musical. Today, given the heavy-handed political message and state control of the ''Sparkling Red Star's'' story and production, it is generally considered a propaganda film.Zhang & Xiao, p. 119. The film was remade in 2007 as an animated tale. Plot The film tells the story of Pan Dongzi, a teenager and son of a Communist army officer. When the father is called off, he leaves Dongzi a red star as a symbol of the cause.
