Lewa Marathon
The Lewa Safari Marathon is an annual fund raising event held at Lewa Downs, about north of Nairobi, Kenya. The endurance race is sponsored by Safaricom in partnership with the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Tusk in order to raise funds for numerous community development and wildlife conservation efforts. Most well known for its unique setting Runner's World Magazine included the Lewa Marathon as being, 'One of the top ten races to run in your life'. History Since the first event was held in 2000, the Lewa Marathon has become widely known for its difficult terrain and harsh climate, drawing competitors and spectators from all over the world. Lewa Downs
The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (also known as Lewa Downs) is located in northern Kenya. It was formed in and is a wildlife sanctuary incorporating the Ngare Ndare Forest covering over . The Conservancy is home to a wide variety of wildlife including the rare and endangered black rhinos, Grevy's zebras and sitatungas. It also includes the big five ( lion, leopards, elephants, rhinos and Cape buffaloes). Lewa holds over 12% of Kenya's eastern black rhinoceros population and the largest single population of Grevy's zebras in the world (approximately 350 individuals). The Conservancy is also home to the Northern Rangelands Trust, an innovative partnership with a number of communities to the north who have given land for the preservation of wildlife. The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. Nanyuki Cottage Hospital is a nonprofit hospital in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, Kenya. The hospital has 50 inpatient beds and includes an operating theatre, laboratory, X-ray department and pharmacy. The hospital also offers outpatient services such as antiretroviral therapy, family planning, HIV counselling and testing, and immunisation. The hospital is a private charity and is managed by a committee of volunteers elected by members, who then elect the officers. Paul Tergat
Paul Kibii Tergat (born 17 June 1969) is a Kenyan former professional long distance runner. He became the first Kenyan man to set the world record in the marathon in 2003, with a time of 2:04:55, and is regarded as one of the most accomplished long-distance runners of all time. Runnerworld called him the "Most comprehensive runner of all time". Towards the end of his career he concentrated exclusively on the marathon. Tergat set several world records and won many titles on the track, in cross country, and on the road. He lives and trains in Eldoret.
