Leucocoprinus Cygneus
''Leucocoprinus cygneus'' is a species of mushroom producing fungus in the family Agaricaceae. Taxonomy It was first described in 1940 by the Danish mycologist Jakob Emanuel Lange who classified it as ''Lepiota cygnea'' until 1952 when it was classified as ''Pseudobaeospora cygnea'' by the French mycologist Marcel Locquin. In 1978 the Belgian mycologist Paul Heinemann created the new genus ''Sericeomyces'' in an attempt to better arrange the species which are now recognised as belonging to the ''Lepiota'', ''Leucoagaricus'' and ''Leucocoprinus'' genera. He reclassified this species as ''Sericeomyces cygneus'' but noted that placing it in this newly created genus was questionable. Marcel Bon (17 March 1925 – 11 May 2014)http://fmbds.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/CAFAM-2014-CR-complet.pdf was one of France's best known field mycologists. He was born in Picardy in 1925 and came to mycology through general botany, and pharmacology. He lived at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, a quaint little town on the mouth of the river Somme, in Picardy, Northern France, which was a former artists' and writers' retreat, and is now a popular tourist town. In 1987, along with two artists (John Wilkinson, and Denys Ovenden) he produced a comprehensive field guide for mycologists, ''The Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and North-western Europe''. Marcel Locquin, born May 6, 1922, in Lyon, France, died March 18, 2009, was a French mycologist. Locquin rose to eminence in the field of mycology over several years of work with a number of Nobel Prize winners. He himself has won numerous awards. Meinhard Michael Moser (13 March 192430 September 2002) was an Austrian mycologist. His work principally concerned the taxonomy, chemistry, and toxicity of the gilled mushrooms (Agaricales), especially those of the genus ''Cortinarius'', and the ecology of ectomycorrhizal relationships. His contributions to the Kleine Kryptogamenflora von Mitteleuropa series of mycological guidebooks were well regarded and widely used. In particular, his 1953 ''Blätter- und Bauchpilze (Agaricales und Gastromycetes)'' 'The Gilled and Gasteroid Fungi (Agaricales and Gastromycetes)'' which became known as simply "Moser", saw several editions in both the original German and in translation. Paul Heinemann (February 16, 1916 – June 18, 1996) was a Belgian botanist and mycologist. Heinemann specialized in African mycology. In his long career, he published 435 names, including 2 families, 6 genera, 346 species, and 40 varieties. His collections of dried specimens, numbering about 7000, are preserved in the herbaria of the University Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in Gembloux and of the National Botanic Garden of Belgium, in Meise. ''Leucoagaricus'' is a genus of fungi in the family Agaricaceae. Several fungus-growing ants cultivate multiple species for food. The genus contains approximately 90 species. Taxonomy This group of mushrooms was first defined as a subgenus of ''Leucocoprinus'' by Marcel Locquin in 1945, and it was then elevated to the status of genus by Rolf Singer in the journal ''Sydowia'' in 1948. ''Leucocoprinus'' is a genus of fungi in the family Agaricaceae. Its best-known member is the distinctive yellow mushroom '' Leucocoprinus birnbaumii'', which is found in plant pots and greenhouses worldwide. The type species is '' Leucocoprinus cepistipes''. The genus has a widespread distribution and contains over 80 recognised species, however many of these species are very scarcely recorded and little known with only a small number of ''Leucocoprinus'' species which are commonly observed. The majority of the species in this genus are exclusive to tropical environments however numerous species have become a common sight in plant pots and greenhouses resulting in them becoming well known worldwide.
