Leslie Osborne (composer)
Leslie Osborne (1905–1990) was an English television and music executive and composer of light music and themes for television and radio. As a composer, he wrote a number of lighter orchestral pieces such as ''Lullaby for Penelope''. In 1976, Osborne worked for ATV Music and was responsible for trying to get the company's catalogue airtime on BBC radio programmes. In that role, he met composer Simon May, who had then recently had a pop hit with his song "Summer of My Life". Osborne later introduced May to various other TV executives, and he was commissioned to write themes for '' Skorpion'', ''Cold Warrior'', ''EastEnders'' and ''Howards' Way''. Because of his executive role, Osborne was able to secure a writer credit for the themes for ''EastEnders'' and ''Howards' Way'', despite, in reality, May being the sole composer. ATV Music
Sony Music Publishing (formerly Sony/ATV Music Publishing) is the largest music publisher in the world, with over five million songs owned or administered as of end March 2021. US-based, it is part of the Sony Music Group, which is itself owned by Sony Entertainment. The company was formed as Sony/ATV in 1995 by the merger of the original incarnation of Sony Music Publishing and ATV Music, which was owned by entertainer Michael Jackson. Jackson had purchased ATV Music, which included the Lennon–McCartney song catalog, in 1985. In 2012, an investor consortium led by Sony/ATV Music Publishing acquired EMI Music Publishing to become the largest music publishing administrator in the world, with a library of over three million songs. Simon May
Simon May (born 15 August 1944) is a British composer. He has composed many British television theme tunes, including ''EastEnders'' and ''Howards' Way'', and the music for the 1988 film ''The Dawning''. Biography Born in Devizes and a pupil of Dauntsey's School, May was a choral scholar at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a degree in modern languages in 1965. While teaching languages and music at Kingston Grammar School, he co-wrote a musical named ''Smike'' with a colleague, history teacher Clive Barnett and songwriting partner, Roger Holman. Following the publicity ''Smike'' attracted, May was contacted by the BBC, who televised the play in 1973, starring Beryl Reid and Andrew Keir. ''Howards' Way'' is a television drama series produced by BBC Birmingham and transmitted on BBC1 between 1 September 1985 and 25 November 1990. The series deals with the personal and professional lives of the wealthy yachting and business communities in the fictional town of Tarrant on the south coast of England, and was filmed on the River Hamble and the Solent. Most of the location filming for the series was carried out in Bursledon, Hamble, Swanwick, Warsash, Hill Head, Lee-on-the-Solent, Lymington, Hythe, Southampton and Fareham—all in Hampshire. EastEnders Theme Tune
The ''EastEnders'' theme tune was composed by Simon May. Leslie Osborne has a contractual composer credit, but did not contribute to the composition or recording. The theme, which is written in the key of E-flat major, is largely based upon percussion instrument, strings and the piano. It is widely known for its dramatic use of sound, particularly the drums that begin at the end of an episode – which adds a sense of importance, suspense and drama to the cliff-hanger. This in itself, has been parodied and used by television shows since, such as in a ''Friends'' spoof that featured on ''SMTV Live''. The drum fill was written and played by Graham Broad. The theme has become widely recognised. A 2008 poll by PRS for Music cited it as the most recognisable piece of music in the UK, beating the National anthem "God Save the Queen".
