Leonardo Manta
Leonardo Manta (born 5 September 1950) is an Italian-born Swiss former tennis player. Manta was a Davis Cup player for Switzerland, with an appearance in a tie against Spain in Basel in 1971. Partnering with Matthias Werren, he competed in the doubles rubber against Juan Gisbert Sr. and Manuel Orantes. His best result in singles came at the 1971 Swiss Indoors. He reached the final but eventually lost to Jean-Claude Barclay. Both his son Lorenzo and his daughter Joana followed his steps and became professional tennis players. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. Manuel Orantes Corral (; born 6 February 1949) is a former tennis player from Spain who was active in the 1970s and 1980s. He won the US Open men's singles title in 1975, beating defending champion Jimmy Connors in the final. Orantes reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 2. Career On 7 September 1975 Orantes defeated top-seeded Jimmy Connors in the final of the US Open at Forest Hills, New York to win his only Grand Slam title. The Swiss Indoors is a professional men's tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland. History The historical precursor event to this tournament was called the Swiss International Covered Courts that ran from 1920 to 1959, that was a fully open event for international players. To fill that gap this tournament was created in 1970 by Roger Brennwald and originally featured mainly Swiss top players. It became an event on the Grand Prix tennis circuit in 1977, when Björn Borg won the title and stayed until 1989. Since 2009 it has been part of the World Tour 500 Series of the ATP Tour. Lorenzo Manta (born 16 September 1974 in Winterthur) is a former tennis player from Switzerland, who turned professional in 1992. The right-hander reached his highest ATP singles ranking of World No. 103 in June 2000. His best achievement in the grand slam tournaments was reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 1999. There, he had a big upset win over the 1996 Wimbledon champion, Richard Krajicek, in the third round in five sets. Manta was then defeated by Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten in the fourth round.
