Ledston Railway Station
Ledston railway station was a railway station on the now disused Castleford–Garforth line in West Yorkshire, England. The station opened in 1878 and was closed in January 1951, well before the Beeching Axe took effect. History The line between Garforth and Castleford was opened by the North Eastern Railway (NER) on 12 August 1878. The two intermediate stations on the line ( and Ledstone) opened to passenger traffic at the same time (though goods had started in April 1878). The station was equipped with only one platform on the eastern side of the line (Kippax having the same arrangement). The station was noted in the original NER architects drawings as being ''Allerton Bywater'', but the NER had a common practice of not repeating station names across its network; they already had an Allerton station on the Harrogate to York line. Allerton Bywater
Allerton Bywater is a semi-rural village and civil parish in the south-east of the City of Leeds metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 4,717. The village itself is north of Castleford, with neighbouring villages Kippax and Great Preston all providing local amenities. St Aidan's Nature reserve borders the village attracting many visitors with its beauty and charm. Castleford Railway Station
Castleford railway station serves the town of Castleford in West Yorkshire. It lies on the Hallam and Pontefract lines, south-east of Leeds. Although it was built originally as a through station, regular passenger services beyond Castleford towards York were discontinued in January 1970. Today, all trains calling at the station reverse here, arriving and departing from the former northbound platform 1. Platform 2 is currently out of use and inaccessible, though it was brought back into use temporarily during the Leeds First project in 2002; Transpennine services between York and Huddersfield were diverted to avoid engineering work in Leeds, routed via Church Fenton, Castleford and Wakefield Kirkgate. Bowers Railway Station
Bowers railway station was a station opened in 1934 by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) on the Castleford–Garforth line, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was only open for 17 years, being closed in January 1951, though the line remained open until the 1990s for coal traffic from the nearby collieries. History In 1934, the LNER opened a single platform halt on the Castleford–Garforth line between and railway stations. The platform was only capable of accommodating two coaches and was situated the eastern side of the line (as at Kippax and Ledston), and served a new housing estate between the railway and Bowers Row Colliery. The Transport Act 1947 (10 & 11 Geo. 6 c. 49) was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The Beeching cuts (also Beeching Axe) was a plan to increase the efficiency of the nationalised railway system in Great Britain. The plan was outlined in two reports: ''The Reshaping of British Railways'' (1963) and ''The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes'' (1965), written by Richard Beeching and published by the British Railways Board.
