Laxey Station
Laxey Railway Station ( Manx: ''Stashoon Raad Yiarn Laksaa)'' is an interchange station in the village of Laxey on the east coast of the Isle of Man. It is the principal intermediate station on the Manx Electric Railway (3' 0" (914 mm) gauge) as well as being the lower terminus of the Snaefell Mountain Railway (3' 6" (1067 mm) gauge, to accommodate a central braking rail). It is thus the island's only dual-gauge station, albeit with completely separate tracks. Some MER services from/to Douglas terminate here. Facilities The tin-roofed station building dates from the early years of the line and features the station name in large lettering painted on its roof. This building houses a booking office and a café as well as the station toilets, and was extensively refurbished in 1994, marking the centenary of the tram service to the village, though not on this site. Manx Electric Railway
The Manx Electric Railway ( Manx: ''Raad Yiarn Lectragh Vannin'') is an electric interurban tramway connecting Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey in the Isle of Man. It connects with the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway at its southern terminus at Derby Castle at the northern end of the promenade in Douglas, and with the Snaefell Mountain Railway at Laxey. Many visitors take an excursion on the trams. It is the oldest electric tram line in the world whose original rolling stock is still in service. History The Manx Electric Railway was built by Alexander Bruce, a banker, Frederick Saunderson, a civil engineer and Alfred Jones Lusty, a land owner, who formed the Douglas Bay Estate company to develop land north of Douglas. Snaefell Mountain Railway
The Snaefell Mountain Railway ( gv, Raad Yiarn Sniaull) is an electric mountain railway on the Isle of Man in Europe. It joins the village of Laxey with the summit of Snaefell, at above sea level the highest point on the island. It connects with the Manx Electric Railway (MER) in Laxey. The line is long, is built to gauge and uses a Fell Incline Railway System centre rail for braking on the steep gradients. It is electrified using overhead wires at 550 volts direct current, with bow collectors. Operation The railway operates from March to early November, taking 30 minutes for a one-way journey. In winter the overhead wires on the exposed upper part of the route are dismantled to avoid damage from icing. Laxey Car Sheds
Laxey Car Shed ( Manx: ''Bwaagyn Charr'' ''Laksaa'') is a storage facility for the Manx Electric Railway in the village of Laxey on the Isle of Man. It also serves as an intermediate stopping place on the line, being the last before reaching the mid-way point of the village station. Usage It is used to store service cars of the tramway and for many years was a storage site for unused passenger cars and trailers. It is notable for a disastrous fire that destroyed all contents in 1930, accounting for the only major loss of rolling stock that the railway has ever encountered, save for the 10-13 Class Trams which were short-lived and converted early on. Layout The shed was originally fitted with four tracks and limited clearance but now houses three tracks, the site of the fourth having been given over to road vehicle storage. Dumbell's Row Halt
Dumbell's Row is an intermediate stopping place on the Manx Electric Railway on the Isle of Man and is the first on the northern section of the line from Laxey, opened in 1899. Location The stop serves the village and is the nearest tram stop to the Laxey Wheel and lies to the north of the village's main station. Siding Nearby is located next to a siding. The siding is now used to house the line's permanent way rolling stock, but was used initially for the Year of Railways main event in 1993. This was when Isle of Man Railway locomotive No. 4 ''Loch'' of 1874 operated services between here and the Dhoon Quarry as part of a series of special events. Bungalow Station
Bungalow Station ( Manx: ''Stashoon Yn Thie Injil'') (more commonly ''The Bungalow'') is the only intermediate station on the Isle of Man's Snaefell Mountain Railway and is located where the main mountain road intersects the line. Manx Language
Manx ( or , pronounced or ), also known as Manx Gaelic, is a Gaelic language of the insular Celtic branch of the Celtic language family, itself a branch of the Indo-European language family. Manx is the historical language of the Manx people. Although only few children native to the Isle of Man speak Manx as a first language, there has been a steady increase in the number of speakers since the death of Ned Maddrell in 1974. He was considered to be the last speaker to grow up in a Manx-speaking community environment. Despite this, the language has never fallen completely out of use, with a minority having some knowledge of it as a heritage language, and it is still an important part of the island's culture and cultural heritage. Laxey
Laxey ( gv, Laksaa) is a village on the east coast of the Isle of Man. Its name derives from the Old Norse ''Laxa'' meaning 'Salmon River'. Its key distinguishing features are its three working vintage railways and the largest working waterwheel in the world. It is also the location of King Orry's Grave. The village lies on the A2, the main Douglas to Ramsey road, and on the vintage Manx Electric Railway, and Snaefell Mountain Railway. Laxey Glen is one of the Manx National Glens; another glen, Dhoon Glen, is about 1 miles away. Dual-gauge
In railway engineering, "gauge" is the transverse distance between the inner surfaces of the heads of two rails, which for the vast majority of railway lines is the number of rails in place. However, it is sometimes necessary for track to carry railway vehicles with wheels matched to two different gauges. Such track is described as dual gauge – achieved either by addition of a third rail, if it will fit, or by two additional rails. Dual-gauge tracks are more expensive to configure with signals and sidings, and to maintain, than two separate single-gauge tracks.
