Lawrence Doheny
Lawrence Doheny (14 April 1924 - 7 September 1982) was an Irish-born American television and film director who directed more than 100 episodes of television from the 1950s to the 1980s. Born in Limerick, Doheny emigrated to the United States in the 1930s and began directing for television, first on the series '' The Big Story'' and ''Rescue 8''. In 1961 he wrote and directed a feature film, ''Teenage Millionaire''. This would be Doheny's only foray into feature films. For the rest of his career he directed television series, most notably ''Adam-12'' (13 episodes), ''The Rockford Files'' (12 episodes), ''Black Sheep Squadron'' (8 episodes), and ''Magnum, P.I.'' (8 episodes). Doheny also directed television films. Limerick ( ; ga, Luimneach ) is a western city in Ireland situated within County Limerick. It is in the province of Munster and is located in the Mid-West which comprises part of the Southern Region. ''The Big Story'' is an American radio and television crime drama which dramatized the true stories of real-life newspaper reporters. The only continuing character was the narrator, Bob Sloane. Radio Sponsored by Pall Mall cigarettes, the program began on NBC Radio on April 2, 1947. With Lucky Strike cigarettes sponsoring the last two seasons, it was broadcast until March 23, 1955. The radio series was top rated, rivaling Bing Crosby's ''Philco Radio Time''. Produced by Barnard J. Prockter, the shows were scripted by Gail Ingram, Arnold Pearl and Max Ehrlich. Tom Vietor and Harry Ingram directed the series. Gail and Harry Ingram were husband and wife. The theme was taken from ''Ein Heldenleben'' ("A Hero's Life"), a tone poem by Richard Strauss. ''Rescue 8'' is a syndicated American action adventure crime drama series about Los Angeles County Fire Department Rescue Squad 8. It premiered in 1958 and originally ran for two seasons with syndicated reruns continuing for almost a decade thereafter. It starred Jim Davis as fireman Wes Cameron (much later cast as Jock Ewing on CBS's ''Dallas''), and Lang Jeffries as the fireman Skip Johnson. Nancy Rennick and Mary K. Apollo 13 (April 1117, 1970) was the seventh crewed mission in the Apollo space program and the third meant to land on the Moon. The craft was launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank in the service module (SM) failed two days into the mission. The crew instead looped around the Moon and returned safely to Earth on April 17. The mission was commanded by Jim Lovell, with Jack Swigert as command module (CM) pilot and Fred Haise as Lunar Module (LM) pilot. Swigert was a late replacement for Ken Mattingly, who was grounded after exposure to rubella. A routine stir of an oxygen tank ignited damaged wire insulation inside it, causing an explosion that vented the contents of both of the SM's oxygen tanks to space.
