Latin Quarter (band)
Latin Quarter is a British band formed in 1983. They had one top 20 single "Radio Africa" in the United Kingdom. The British radio were cautious in the eighties to play their singles because of their political based lyrics. They became more popular in Germany and in northern Europe. Latin Quarter released their latest album, ''Releasing the Sheep'', on 29 October 2021. Their sound mixes elements of pop, rock, reggae and folk with largely political based lyrics. Career Latin Quarter began when ex-printer and Lincoln-born Steve Skaith left Liverpool for London in 1982 to write songs for music publishers Chappell. Skaith was also working on some rather more radical music with lyrics from an old friend of his called Mike Jones, both were members from the left wing political group Big Flame. Pop (music)
Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. ''Modern Times'' is the first album by the British band Latin Quarter. It reached the top 20 in Germany and Sweden and spent two weeks on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at Number 91. It includes the songs "Radio Africa" which reached Number 19 in the UK Singles Chart. and "America for Beginners" which was covered by Toyah on her album ''Minx''. Political themes Latin Quarter's lyricist Mike Jones describes the album as "a veritable manifesto" of their left wing views as members of Big Flame. Nigel Gray
Nigel Gray (1947 – 30 July 2016) was an English record producer. His album credits include ''Outlandos d'Amour'' (1978), ''Reggatta de Blanc'' (1979), and ''Zenyatta Mondatta'' (1980) for the Police, ''Kaleidoscope'' (1980) and '' Juju'' (1981) for Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as five albums for Godley & Creme. Gray was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album for ''Zenyatta Mondatta'' (1981) and also won two Grammys for producer of Best Rock Performance ("Don't Stand So Close to Me") and Best Rock Instrumental (" Behind My Camel"). Ebbw Vale (; cy, Glynebwy) is a town at the head of the valley formed by the Ebbw Fawr tributary of the Ebbw River in Wales. Ignition Management
Ignition Management is a London-based music management company run by partners Marcus Russell & Alec McKinlay. Ignition Management was formed in late 1983 by Welshman Marcus Russell, who at the time managed London based band Latin Quarter, who became established in Scandinavia & West Germany before going on to score a UK Hit with the song Radio Africa in 1986. Ignition went on to manage Cambridge band The Bible, before expanding to take on Johnny Marr, The The and Electronic as the 90's approached. It was at this time that previous associate Alec Mckinlay returned from his native New Zealand to London to rejoin Ignition, and to later become a partner with Russell. Big Flame (political Group)
Big Flame was "a revolutionary socialism, revolutionary socialist feminism, feminist organisation with a working-class orientation" in the United Kingdom. Founded in Liverpool in 1970, the group initially grew rapidly, with branches appearing in some other cities. Its publications emphasised that "a revolutionary party is necessary but Big Flame is not that party, nor is it the embryo of that party". The group was influenced by the Italian Lotta Continua group. The group published a magazine, ''Big Flame'', and a journal, ''Revolutionary Socialism''.
