Alan Ladd
Alan Walbridge Ladd (September 3, 1913 – January 29, 1964) was an American actor and film producer. Ladd found success in film in the 1940s and early 1950s, particularly in films noir and Westerns. He was often paired with Veronica Lake in films noir, such as ''This Gun for Hire'' (1942), ''The Glass Key'' (1942), and ''The Blue Dahlia'' (1946). ''Whispering Smith'' (1948) was his first Western and color film, and ''Shane'' (1953) was noted for its contributions to the genre. Ladd also appeared in ten films with William Bendix; both actors coincidentally died in 1964. His other notable credits include ''Two Years Before the Mast'' (1946) and ''The Great Gatsby'' (1949). Helen F. Ladd is an education economist who currently works as the Susan B. King Professor Emeritus of Public Policy and Economics at Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy. Mike Ladd (born 1959) is an Australian poet and radio presenter. Mike Ladd was born in Berkeley, California while his Australian parents were living and working in the United States, but he returned to Australia when he was one year old, and grew up in the Adelaide Hills. Ladd began writing poetry at a very young age, but took it up seriously while he was at the University of Adelaide, studying English and Philosophy. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1979. He then joined a new wave rock band called "The Lounge" as a singer and lyricist, and later travelled and worked in Europe and Africa. Returning to Australia, in 1983 he joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Adelaide, working as a sound engineer and then as a producer. Catherine Everit Macy Ladd (April 6, 1863 – August 27, 1945), known as Kate Macy Ladd, was an American philanthropist who founded and endowed the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation in honor of her father. Biography Kate was born in New York City, a descendant of Thomas and Sarah Macy, Massachusetts settlers in the late 1630s. Ladd's was a family-owned soft-drink manufacturer of Adelaide, South Australia, which operated from around 1860 to around 1950. History Joseph Onesimus Ladd (c. January 1818 – 12 June 1882) was born in Nacton, Sussex and emigrated to Australia, arriving in Adelaide around 1847 via Melbourne, Victoria. In 1849 he was granted a publican's licence for the Gepp's Cross Hotel. He married Caroline Fuller (c. 1828 – 2 August 1897) in Adelaide on 6 April 1853. They had thirteen children. He set up a ginger beer manufacturing business in Flinders Street, Adelaide, around 1860. In 1868 he moved to a half-acre block on Rundle Street, between Wilcox's drapery and Allott's pharmacy.
