Lada Žigo
Lada Žigo (born 1970) is a Croatian writer. She was born in Zagreb, lived in Split and studied comparative literature and philosophy at the University of Zagreb. Her first book ''People and News People'' (''Ljudi i novinari'') was published in 2007 and was shortlisted for two major literary prizes – Ksaver Šandor Gjalski and Kiklop. Her second novel ''Bitches'' (''Babetine'') appeared in 2009, followed by ''Roulette'' (''Rulet'') in 2010. ''Roulette'' won the EU Prize for Literature and it was translated into Italian for Mimesis edizioni. Žigo's latest book is ''Full Steam Ahead Into the European Union'' (''Punom parom u Europsku uniju'', 2020). The University of Zagreb ( hr, Sveučilište u Zagrebu, ; la, Universitas Studiorum Zagrabiensis) is the largest Croatian university and the oldest continuously operating university in the area covering Central Europe south of Vienna and all of Southeastern Europe. Ksaver Šandor Gjalski
Ksaver Šandor Gjalski (26 October 1854 – 6 February 1935) was a Croatian writer and civil servant. He was born Ljubomil Babić at Gredice, near Klanjec in Hrvatsko Zagorje into a minor aristocratic family. He finished high school in Varaždin and earned law degrees in Zagreb and Vienna in 1874. Gjalski was involved in politics. In 1906, he was elected into the Croatian Parliament. From 1917 to 1918, he held the post of mayor of the Zagreb county. Gjalski wrote novels, but his best known work is ''Pod starim krovovima'' (''Under Old Roofs''), a collection of short stories in which he described the economic decline of the Croatian aristocracy.
