LNWR Whale Precursor Class
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) "Precursor" Class was a type of 4-4-0 ("Atlantic") steam locomotive designed by the company's Chief Mechanical Engineer, George Whale. Introduced in 1904, it should not be confused with the LNWR 2-4-0 "Precursor" Class of 1874 designed by Francis Webb, the last example of which was scrapped in 1895. In 1906, a 4-4-2T ("American") tank variant of Webb's engine, the "Precursor Tank" Class, also entered service. Photographic Grey
Photographic grey, also known as works grey, was a paint scheme commonly applied to steam locomotives during the period before colour photography became commonplace. It was applied to allow sharper, more detailed images of the locomotive to be recorded. The first photographs of railways and their locomotives were made by private individuals, but by the 1860s the railway companies themselves were keen to create official photographs of the highest quality possible of their latest designs, which led to the adoption of photographic grey in railway photography. Use Railway companies wished to record their latest locomotives for use in publicity material and advertisements, and as a technical record of their work. LNWR Improved Precedent Class
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Improved Precedent Class or Renewed Precedent Class is a class of steam locomotives originally designed for express passenger work. They later gained the nickname of ''Jumbos''. History The locomotives were designed by F. W. Webb. A total of 158 were built in batches by Crewe Works 1887–1897 with two further additions in 1898 and 1901 respectively. They were officially "renewals" (i.e. replacements) of 96 Newton Class and 62 Precedent Class, so that, for accountancy purposes, they could be charged against the Revenue account rather than the Capital account of a "new" locomotive. On renewal, they kept the numbers and names of their predecessors, and as a result the numbering system continued to be completely haphazard. Holyhead
Holyhead (,; cy, Caergybi , "Cybi's fort") is the largest town and a community in the county of Isle of Anglesey, Wales, with a population of 13,659 at the 2011 census. LNWR Jubilee Class
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Jubilee Class was a class of 4-4-0 4-cylinder compound locomotives by F.W. Webb. A total of forty were built from 1897–1900. Slightly unusually for the LNWR, the class received a number series, this being 1901–1940. As with other Webb compounds, they were mechanically unreliable. As a result, George Whale rebuilt these as two cylinder simple locomotives of the Renown Class, starting with 1918 ''Renown'' in 1908. Rebuilt engines retained their numbers. Rebuilding continued so that at the grouping of 1923, only 9 Jubilees remained. These were 1903/4/8/11/12/15/23/27/29. 1908 ''Royal George'' was withdrawn in January 1923, but the remaining eight were allocated the LMS numbers 5110–5117, in sequence. Crewe () is a railway town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East in Cheshire, England. The London and North Western Railway (LNWR, L&NWR) was a British railway company between 1846 and 1922. In the late 19th century, the L&NWR was the largest joint stock company in the United Kingdom. Sparkford
Sparkford is a village and civil parish in the South Somerset district of Somerset, England. The parish includes the village of Weston Bampfylde.
