Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba do Rio de Janeiro ( en, Independent League of the Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro), commonly known by the acronym LIESA, is the principal association that organizes the Carnival of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Estação Primeira de Mangueira, or simply Mangueira, is a samba school in Rio de Janeiro (city), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The school was founded on April 28, 1928, by , Cartola, , among others. It is located at the Mangueira neighborhood, near the region of Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro, Maracanã. The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is a decorated, traditional samba school. It was champion of the 2017 Carnival parade and has the highest number of wins in the top-tier Rio parade, with 22 titles in total. History At the start of the 20th century, in Oswaldo Cruz, a neighborhood in the city of Rio de Janeiro there was a carnivalesque group of dancers called ''Quem Fala de Nós Come Mosca'' literally translated as "Who talks about us eats flies". They were based in Dona Ester. A dissidence of this group of dancers (called "bloco" in Brazilian Portuguese) appeared in 1922 and another ''bloco'', the ''Baianinhas de Oswaldo Cruz'' ( Baianas of Oswaldo Cruz) was created. The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Beija-Flor is a Samba school headquartered in the municipality of Nilópolis, Baixada Fluminense, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In total, Beija-Flor has won 14 parades of the Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro; as general champion in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2018. It was the overall runner-up and vice champion school in 1979, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel is a samba school of the city of Rio de Janeiro, being located on Rua Coronel Tamarindo, in the neighborhood of Padre Miguel. History The Mocidade was founded on 10 November 1955, by eight people: Silvio Trindade, Renato da Silva, Djalma Rosa, Olímpio Bonifácio (Bronquinha), Orozimbo de Oliveira (Seu Orozimbo), Garibaldi F. Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Acadêmicos do Salgueiro, popularly known simply as Salgueiro is a popular samba school from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was established on March 5, 1953 from the merger of Morro do Salgueiro's two samba schools called Azul e Branco do Salgueiro (''Salgueiro's Blue and White'') and Depois Eu Digo (''I'll Say it Later''), which then merged again with Unidos do Salgueiro. Imperatriz Leopoldinense
The samba school Imperatriz Leopoldinense was created on March 6, 1956 in the suburb of Ramos, in Rio de Janeiro. It is named after Maria Leopoldina, archduchess of Austria and Empress of Brazil, consort of Emperor Pedro I. Imperatriz began its successful journey to victory in 1980 when it won the championship for the first time. Since then it won the first prize eight times. It was thrice champion of the Special Group and is currently headquartered in Boulevard 28 de Setembro in Vila Isabel. The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Acadêmicos do Grande Rio is a samba school of the Special Group of the carnival of the city of Rio de Janeiro, being headquartered on Almirante Barroso street in Duque de Caxias. History In the 1950s, the city of Duque de Caxias had an effective participation in the Carioca Carnival, with the samba school Cartolinhas de Caxias. Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Unidos do Viradouro, or simply Viradouro or Unidos do Viradouro, is a samba school that competes in the Carnival city of Rio de Janeiro. It is located in the Barreto neighborhood in Niterói. History It was founded on 24 June 1946 by Nelson dos Santos, known as Jangada, who organized drumming in the backyard of his home in Capitão Roseira, at the top of D. Mário Viana street, known as Viradouro street. He also competed in the Niterói parades for 39 years (1947 to 1985); however, during the period he came to Rio de Janeiro a few times (64 and 65), getting more than a 26th in the third division. The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Império Serrano is a samba school of the city of Rio de Janeiro, that was created on March 23 of 1947 after a disagreement of the extinct samba school Prazer da Serrinha. It was nine times champion of the Carnaval and can be considered one of the most traditional schools of the samba of the city. One of the principal vainglories of its members is the open democracy of the school, established in the school's foundation.
