The Kronenbourg Open was a one-off European Tour golf tournament which was played at Gardagolf Country Club in Soiano del Lago, Italy from 25–28 March 1993. Sam Torrance shot 69-68-73-74 for a 4 under par 72 hole score of 284, and defeated his fellow Scot Mike Miller by one stroke. The European Tour (currently known as the DP World Tour for sponsorship reasons), legally the PGA European Tour is the leading men's professional golf tour in Europe. The organisation also operates the European Senior Tour (for players aged fifty or older) and the developmental Challenge Tour; the second tier of men’s professional golf in Europe. Stroke Play
Stroke play, also known as medal play, is a scoring system in the sport of golf in which the total number of strokes is counted over one or more rounds of 18 holes. In stroke play, the winner is the player who has taken the fewest strokes over the course of the round, or rounds. Sam Torrance
Samuel Robert Torrance (born 24 August 1953) is a Scottish professional golfer and sports commentator. He was one of the leading players on the European Tour from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s, with 21 Tour wins. Torrance was a member of European Ryder Cup teams on eight occasions consecutively; on Cup-winning teams four times. He was also part of the winning Scotland team at the 1995 Dunhill Cup. He was the winning non-playing captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2002. Torrance was honoured with the MBE (1996) and OBE (2003), for his outstanding contributions to golf. Early life Torrance was born and grew up in Largs on the westcoast of Scotland, playing golf at Routenburn Golf Club, near his family home. Gardagolf Country Club
The Gardagolf Country Club is an Italian golf course located in Soiano del Lago, but the playing field also occupies with the municipalities of Polpenazze del Garda and Manerba del Garda; close to the Lake Garda in the Province of Brescia. The first 18 holes (Red and White Course) designed by Cotton, Pennick, Steel & Partners were inaugurated on the 28th of June 1986, while the Yellow Course was added in 1990. The club hosted the Italian Open three times in 1997, 2003 and 2018, the Kronenbourg Open in 1993, and the Ladies Italian Open in 1990. On 12 December 2017 the Italian Federation announced that Gardagolf would host the Italian Open (this time a Rolex Series event) in 2018 for the third time. Mike Miller (golfer)
Michael John Miller (born 22 April 1951) is a Scottish professional golfer. Miller was born in Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire, near Glasgow. He turned professional in 1978 at a relatively late age, and was the European Tour's Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 1979. That year he lost a playoff to Mark James at the Welsh Golf Classic. He never came closer than that to winning a European Tour event, though he finished second in the 1983 Kronenbourg Open. His best ranking on the European Tour Order of Merit was forty-seventh in 1981. However he has won several professional tournaments, including one each on the Challenge Tour and the European Seniors Tour, which he joined in 2001. 1994 European Tour
The 1994 European Tour, titled as the 1994 Volvo Tour for sponsorship reasons, was the 23rd official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour. The season was made up of 38 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and several non-counting "Approved Special Events". The Order of Merit was won by Scotland's Colin Montgomerie for the second time, defending the title he won in 1993. Changes for 1994 Aside from scheduling, initially there was just one change from the previous season, with the addition of the Extremadura Open. This created a sequence of five consecutive tournaments in Spain through February and March, and a total of nine events in the country although the Madrid Open would later be cancelled. The 1993 European Tour, titled as the 1993 Volvo Tour for sponsorship reasons, was the 22nd official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour. The season was made up of 38 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and five non-counting "Approved Special Events". The Order of Merit was won by Scotland's Colin Montgomerie for the first time, overtaking Nick Faldo with victory in the season ending Volvo Masters.
