Kolari Railway Station
Kolari railway station is located in the municipality of Kolari in the Lapland region of Finland. It is the northernmost railway station in Finland, located 800 kilometers north of Helsinki Central railway station. Kolari station is the terminus of the track from Tornio to Kolari, and serves both passenger and cargo traffic. Passenger traffic is at its highest during the skiing season and, as well as Kolari, the station also serves Levi, Ylläs, Äkäslompolo, Pallas and Muonio, all of which can be reached by bus from the station. For part of the year, the station is also served by car transporter trains from Helsinki, Turku and Tampere. A new station building was constructed at Kolari in 2000, in the style of a Lappish hut. Most trains (both freight and passenger) at Kolari are hauled by VR Class Dr16 diesel locomotives, with smaller Dv12 locomotives also seeing use. Pallastunturi
Pallastunturi is a group of seven fells in the municipalities of Muonio and Enontekiö in Lapland, Finland. The highest peak is Taivaskero, which is also highest peak of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and whole Lapland excluding Käsivarsi area. The fells are located in the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, which was originally established in 1938. Pallastunturi fells are one of the 27 National landscapes of Finland. VR Class Dv12
The Dv12 (Sv12 and Sr12 until 1977) is the standard Finnish medium-weight diesel-hydraulic road switcher operated by VR. As all the main lines of Finnish railway network have been electrificied, the locomotive is designated mostly to unelectrified, less frequently used side lines. Occasionally it may still pull cargo trains on main lines. It has also been put in service as a shunter, replacing older classes Dv15 and Dv16 as they were retired. A total of 192 locomotives were built by Lokomo and Valmet between the years 1963 and 1984. As of 2022, the oldest Dv12 units still in use are 59 years old. Technical information The Dv12 is a general purpose locomotive which was designed for both passenger and cargo train use. VR Class Dr16
The Dr16 is a class of diesel-electric locomotives used by VR (Finnish Railways). The 23 locomotives have a single, off-centre cab and are currently VR's most powerful diesel locomotives. Their nickname is ''"Iso Vaalee"'' (Big Blonde). They are presently mainly used on heavy freight services in northern Finland; their main passenger duty is the haulage of trains on the non-electrified line between Kemi and Kolari in Lapland. Dr16 locomotives were also used extensively on the line between Oulu and Rovaniemi, prior to the completion of the electrification of the line in 2004. Motorail
A motorail train or accompanied car train (ACT) is a passenger train on which passengers can take their car or automobile along with them on their journey. Muonio (previously called ''Muonionniska'', se, Muoná) is a municipality of Finland. The town is located in far northern Finland above the Arctic Circle on the country's western border, within the area of the former Lappi (Lapland) province. Ylläs
Ylläs, or Yllästunturi in Finnish, is a high fell in the municipality of Kolari in Lapland Province of Finland. There are two villages near Ylläs: Äkäslompolo on the north side and Ylläsjärvi in the south. They are connected by an 11 km road, around the side of the fell. Both villages derive much of their income from tourism. Ylläs is a popular cross country and downhill skiing centre. The area's marketing slogan is "Ylläs on ykkönen!" (Finnish for "Ylläs is number one!"). Ylläs is the second largest ski resort in Lapland, after Levi.
