Klopjag
Klopjag is a South African, Afrikaans folk-rock band formed in Pretoria, Gauteng in 2002. The band's founding members were singer-songwriter and guitarist John-Henry Opperman, cellist Marie-Louise Diedericks, singer-songwriter and guitarist Salmon de Jager and singer-songwriter and guitarist Dawie de Jager. Drummer and percussionist, Werner Griesel joined the band in 2005 and Morné Bam joined the band as bassist in 2006. History Klopjag played their first ever show together on 13 February 2002. Their debut album 13/02 was nominated for a "Geraas" Music Award in 2003, and Musiek vir die Agtergrond was nominated for a SAMA in 2009 while they were playing major festivals like Aardklop and KKNK. The group has always been well received by music critics for their folk-rock lyrical storytelling themes. Afrikaans
Afrikaans (, ) is a West Germanic language that evolved in the Dutch Cape Colony from the Dutch vernacular of Holland proper (i.e., the Hollandic dialect) used by Dutch, French, and German settlers and their enslaved people. Jam Band
A jam band is a musical group whose concerts (and live albums) are characterized by lengthy improvisational "jams." These include extended musical improvisation over rhythmic grooves and chord patterns, and long sets of music which often cross genre boundaries. Most jam band sets will consist of variations on songs that have already been released as studio recordings. Jam bands are known for having a very fluid structure, often having one song lead into another without any interruption. Funk Rock
Funk rock is a fusion genre that mixes elements of funk and rock. James Brown and others declared that Little Richard and his mid-1950s road band, The Upsetters, were the first to put the funk in the rock and roll beat, with a biographer stating that their music "spark dthe musical transition from fifties rock and roll to sixties funk." Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. South African Music Awards
The South African Music Awards (often simply the SAMAs) are the Recording Industry of South Africa's music industry awards, established in 1995. The ceremony is held annually, usually in late April or May, with the judging process starting in November of the previous year. The nominations are typically announced at the end of March. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA. The show has mostly been held at the Super Bowl in Sun City, with the exception of three years, and broadcast live on national broadcaster, SABC. Aardklop
Aardklop is an annual South African arts festival held in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Potchefstroom has always been a cultural city and home to several well-known South African writers and artists. The Aardklop National Arts Festival has been in existence from 1998 and has since become a bastion of arts and culture in South Africa. The festival incorporates predominantly, but not exclusively, Afrikaans theatre, music, cabaret and visual arts, presented in a variety of venues across the town. A large crafts market and open-air performances also form an integral part of the festival. The event annually draws more than 700 artists over a period of 6 days.
