It was established on November 14, 1951 and is maintained by Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. It is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Newell, 12 km south of the city of Brooks and within the County of Newell. The County of Newell is a municipal district in southern Alberta, Canada. Located in Census Division No. 2, its municipal office is located south of the City of Brooks. History It was incorporated as the ''County of Newell No. 4'' on January 1, 1953, through the amalgamation of the ''Municipal District of Newell No. 28'' and part of the ''Municipal District of Bow Valley No. 40''. Its name was changed to the ''County of Newell'' on September 9, 2011. Brooks, Alberta
Brooks is a city in southeast Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by the County of Newell. It is located on Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) and the Canadian Pacific Railway, approximately southeast of Calgary, and northwest of Medicine Hat. The city has an elevation of . History The area that is now Brooks was used as a bison-hunting ground for the Blackfoot and Crow. After Treaty 7 was signed in 1877, homesteaders moved into the area to begin farming. Before 1904, the area still did not have a name. Through a contest sponsored by the Postmaster General, the area was named after Noel Edgell Brooks, a Canadian Pacific Railway Divisional Engineer from Calgary. Brooks was incorporated as a village on July 14, 1910, and then as a town on September 8, 1911. Its population in the 1911 Census of Canada was 486. Lake Newell
Lake Newell is a large man-made reservoir in southern Alberta, Canada. It is located south of the city of Brooks, east of Veteran Highway. The reservoir was filled in 1914 through the construction of the Bassano Dam. It was named after T.H. Newell, a landowner and irrigation expert. The County of Newell is in turn named after the lake. The lake covers a surface of and has a drainage basin of . The shallow lake has an average depth of and reaches a maximum depth of . It lies at an elevation of . The lake adjoins two man made wetlands: Kinbrook Marsh North and Kinbrook Marsh South. It empties into the Bow River after flowing through Rolling Hills Lake, an extension of the lake, filled when the dam was raised in 1939.
