Kent County (2016 population 30,475) is located in east-central New Brunswick, Canada. The county features a unique blend of cultures including Mi'kmaq, Acadian, and English. Some larger tourist attractions include the dune de Bouctouche, Kouchibouguac National Park, and Bonar Law Commons. Federally, it is split bwtween the ridings of Beauséjour, represented by Dominic LeBlanc of the Liberal Party of Canada and Miramichi—Grand Lake, represented by Jake Stewart of the Conservative Party of Canada. Provincially, it is split between the electoral districts of Kent North and Kent South. The Canadian province of New Brunswick has 15 counties. While they no longer serve as a local government territorial division as traditionally defined with shire towns or county towns, they continue to define a regional community. With the reorganization of local government legislation contained in the Robichaud government's reforms, collectively called the New Brunswick Equal Opportunity program, county municipalities ceased to function in 1966 and their councils were dissolved. Another form of regional local government did not replace the county. Instead, many small village municipalities were created, with the surrounding predominantly rural areas remaining unincorporated. Jake Daniel Stewart (born March 10, 1978) is a Canadian politician who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the 2010 provincial election. He represented the electoral district of Southwest Miramichi as a member of the Progressive Conservatives. He resigned on August 17, 2021 and was elected the Conservative Member of Parliament for the riding of Miramichi—Grand Lake on September 20, 2021. Political career Stewart entered municipal politics in 2008, having run for the office of councillor in his hometown of Blackville. In 2010, he entered provincial politics, and defeated incumbent Liberal MLA Rick Brewer, who at that time was the Minister of Human Resources. Saint-Louis-de-Kent, New Brunswick
Saint-Louis-de-Kent is a Canadian village in Kent County, New Brunswick. Often shortened to simply Saint-Louis, the village is situated on the Kouchibouguacis River at the main entrance to Kouchibouguac National Park. It is considered as the birthplace of the Acadian Flag. A local park, ''parc des forgeron'', celebrates the birth of this flag in 1884. History Saint-Louis-de-Kent was founded by Joseph Babineau in 1797. L'Académie Saint-Louis was founded in 1874 by Father Marcel-François Richard. The Congregation of Notre-Dame of Montréal founded a convent in 1879. The academy became a college in 1876, but it was closed in 1882 by Bishop James Rogers. Additional facilities included a telephone line between Quebec and Halifax. Richibucto (originally Liverpool) is a civil parish in Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the town of Richibucto, the village of Rexton, the Indian Island 28 Indian reserve, and the local service districts of Cap-de-Richibouctou, Sainte-Anne-de-Kent, and the parish of Richibucto, all of which except the Indian reserve are members of the Kent Regional Service Commission (KRSC). Origin of name The parish was named for the Richibucto River, which in turn is of Mi'kmaq origin. History Richibucto was erected from Carleton Parish as Liverpool parish in 1827. In 1832 the parish's name was changed to Richibucto. In 1835 the southwestern part of the parish was erected as Weldford Parish. Richibucto is a town in Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada. Geography The town is situated on the Richibucto River where it discharges into the Northumberland Strait. History Richibucto had been the location of an annual Mi'kmaq summer coastal community prior to British colonisation. The town takes its name from "Elsipogtog" or "L'sipuktuk" Mi'kmaq terms meaning "river of fire". It is believed the term was mispronounced, or misunderstood from the Mi'kmaq language. Dundas is a civil parish in Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the towns of Champdoré and Grand-Bouctouche and the rural communities of Beausoleil and Maple Hills; Maple Hills is a member of the Southeast Regional Service Commission, while the others belong to the Kent RSC. Prior to the 2023 governance reform, the parish was divided between the village of Saint-Antoine, the rural community of Cocagne and the local service districts of Grande-Digue, Grand Saint-Antoine, Shediac Bridge-Shediac River, the parish of Dundas, and (through its Saint-Grégoire special service area) the parish of Wellington. Wellington is a civil parish in Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the town of Bouctouche, Buctouche 16 Indian reserve, the incorporated rural community of Cocagne, and the local service districts of Sainte-Anne-de-Kent and the parish of Wellington, all of which except the Indian reserve are members of the Kent Regional Service Commission (KRSC). Bouctouche
Bouctouche is a Canadian town in Kent County, New Brunswick. History Bouctouche was originally named Tjipogtotjg (pronounced ''Chebooktoosk''), a Mi'kmaq word meaning "Great Little Harbour". The region was next settled by brothers Francois LeBlanc and Charles LeBlanc, and brothers Isidore Bastarache and Joseph Bastarache in 1785 as an Acadian community. "La Croix commémorative aux fondateurs de Bouctouche" was unveiled August 29, 1954, to pay tribute to the founders of the town, who first arrived in 1785. It says "We remember François and Hélène (née Breau) LeBlanc; Charlitte and first wife Marie (née Breau) LeBlanc, and his second wife Madeleine (née Girouard); and Joseph and Marie (née Girouard) Bastarache".
