Katunga, Victoria
Katunga is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, 228 kilometres from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Katunga had a population of 996. Katunga Post Office opened on 10 June 1881. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1888, but today does not see regular passenger services. Katunga, similar to much of the surrounding area, is based on agriculture, including dairy production. Bizarrely, the town had two state primary schools with around 90 students at Katunga primary and 7 students at Katunga South primary just 2 km away. Katunga South closed at the end of 2021 after the last 3 students left. Katunga Football Club
The Katunga Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Swans'', is an Australian rules football and netball club playing in the Picola & District Football League. Katunga Football Club joined the Picola & District Football League in 1951 and has called the league its home ever since. The club is based in the small Victorian town of Katunga. The league split into two divisions in 2009 which placed Katunga in the South East Division. They still compete against close rivals Waaia, however now do not have the traditional rival match against Strathmerton, as they are in the North West Division. Goulburn Valley Railway Line, Victoria
The Tocumwal railway line (also known as the Shepparton line) is a gauge railway line in Victoria, Australia. The line runs between the border town of Tocumwal in New South Wales to Southern Cross, Melbourne. The line is utilised by various passenger and freight trains serving the northern suburbs of Melbourne and northern regions of Victoria. History The Melbourne and Essendon Railway Company opened the first section of the Tocumwal railway line from North Melbourne to Essendon in 1860. Following its take over by the Victorian Government in 1867, the line was extended to Tallarook and Mangalore in 1872. Moira Shire Council is a Local Government Area in the Northern Victoria Region of Victoria, Australia. Located in the north-east part of the state, it covers an area of . As at June 2021 the population was 30,018. It includes the towns of Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah, Tungamah and Yarrawonga. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Cobram, Shire of Nathalia, Shire of Numurkah, and parts of the Shire of Tungamah and Shire of Yarrawonga. Goulburn Valley
The Goulburn Valley is a sub-region, part of the Hume region of the Australian state of Victoria. The sub-region consists of those areas in the catchment of the Goulburn River and other nearby streams, and is part of the Murray-Darling Basin. The Goulburn Valley is bordered on the south by the Great Dividing Range and to the north by the Murray River, the state border with New South Wales. Numurkah
Numurkah ( ) is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Goulburn Valley Highway, north of Shepparton, in the Shire of Moira. At the , Numurkah had a population of 4,768. History The area was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people prior to European settlement. Squatters moved into the area from NSW in the late 1830s. After the pastoral runs were made available for farm selection, the township of Numurkah was surveyed in 1875, the Post Office opening 2 November 1878. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1881, but has not seen any passenger services since 1993 when the train to Cobram was withdrawn. The station building remains in private ownership, and a footbridge crosses the line. Numurkah became the headquarters of the Murray Valley Soldier Settlement Area - one of the largest soldier settlements in Australia - after World War I.
