Kalevala (corvette)
Kalevala, a.k.a. "Calevala" (Russian: Калевала), was a propeller-operated corvette of the Military of the Grand Duchy of Finland, Finnish navy. The construction of it was completed in 1858 at Åbo Skeppswarf, Turku Old Shipyard, Grand Duchy of Finland, Finland. From 1860 to 1865, the corvette served in the Pacific Fleet (Russia), Pacific Fleet of Russia. At the time, Finland was an Grand Duchy of Finland, autonomous grand duchy (1809-1917) within the Russian Empire. Construction and launching of Kalevala The corvette was designed by the ship designer Jörgensen, under the auspices of the Finnish Vice Admiral Johan Eberhard von Schantz (1802-1880), who was promoted to admiral in 1866. The construction of the vessel was funded by the Senate of Finland. Military Of The Grand Duchy Of Finland
Between 1809 and 1917 Finland was an autonomous part of the Russian Empire as the Grand Duchy of Finland. Between 1881 and 1901 the Grand Duchy had its own army. Before that several other military units had also been formed. The Grand Duchy inherited its Swedish allotment system, allotment system (Finnish language, Finnish: ''ruotujakolaitos'', Swedish language, Swedish: ''indelningsverket'') from the Sweden-Finland, Swedish military organization. However, for several decades, Russian rulers did not require military service from Finland – operations and defence were mostly taken care by Russian troops based in the Grand Duchy. Russian America (russian: Русская Америка, Russkaya Amerika) was the name for the Russian Empire's colonial possessions in North America from 1799 to 1867. It consisted mostly of present-day Alaska in the United States, but also included small outposts in California, including Fort Ross, and three forts in Hawaii, including Russian Fort Elizabeth. The Hawaiian Islands ( haw, Nā Mokupuni o Hawai‘i) are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, and numerous smaller islets in the North Pacific Ocean, extending some from the island of Hawaii in the south to northernmost Kure Atoll. Johan Hampus Furuhjelm, (russian: Фуругельм, Иван Васильевич; 11 March 1821 – 21 September 1909) was a Finnish-Russian vice-admiral and explorer, commander of the Russian Baltic Fleet, Governor of the Russian Far East, Taganrog and Russian America. Early years Johan Hampus Furuhjelm was born into a Swedish-speaking noble family of Furuhjelm in Helsinki, Grand Duchy of Finland on March 11, 1821.
