History The first attempt of a radio station on 106.3 FM in Sun City was KTPM, which was on the air for less than seven months after signing on June 13, 1962. It was co-owned with Wickenburg's KAKA by Lowell Beer and Paul Mullenix. However, the station was one of the quickest failures in Arizona radio history; it went temporarily silent on January 2, 1963, never to return; the Beer-Mullenix licenses were placed into receivership in June and never reemerged. Sun City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, that is located within the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 39,931 as of the 2020 census. Its adjoining sister city is Sun City West. Both Sun Cities are retirement communities popular with snowbirds. History Sun City was opened January 1, 1960, with five home models, a shopping center, a recreation center, and a golf course. The station was assigned the KQMR call letters by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on September 16, 2005. It airs a Spanish language Latin Pop music format. History 100.3 signed on the weekend of October 18–19, 1980, as KIKO-FM, owned by Willard "Willy" Shoecraft alongside KIKO (AM), who began operating his FM station from a ridge above Globe (the east end used by the local two-way users).
