Kristang Language
or is a creole language spoken by the Kristang, a community of people of mixed Portuguese and indigenous Malay ancestry, chiefly in Malaysia (Malacca), Singapore and Perth, Western Australia. In Malacca, the language is also called , ('Malacca Portuguese'), ('mother tongue'), or simply ('to speak'). In Singapore, it is generally known as Kristang, where it is undergoing sustained revitalisation. In ''Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger'' published by UNESCO, Kristang is classified as a "severely endangered" language, with only about 2,000 speakers. Up to 2014, linguists concerned with Kristang have generally accepted a combined speaker population of about 1,000 individuals or less. The language has about 750 speakers in Malacca. Joan Margaret Marbeck
Joan Margaret Marbeck (26 June 1944, Malacca City, Malaysia - 28 July 2024, Seremban) was a Malaysian scholar specializing in the study of Malay-Portuguese Creole language Kristang in Malaysia and other countries (Singapore, Australia, Macau). Biography She received a pedagogical education. In the years 1965–1990, she used to work in a number of schools and colleges in Malaysia. She took active measures to revive Kristang. She lectured on Kristang at the invitation of a number of world universities and public organizations ( Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, 1997, Eurasian Association in Singapore, 2011; University of Malaya, 2014). Luso-Indians, or Portuguese-Indians, are people who have mixed Indian and Portuguese ancestry; the term also refers to people of Portuguese descent born or living or originating in former Portuguese Indian colonies, the most important of which were Goa and Damaon of the Konkan region, along the Western coast of the present-day Republic of India. Portuguese creoles () are creole languages which have Portuguese as their substantial lexifier.
