Kockengen
Kockengen is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Stichtse Vecht, and lies about 11 km northeast of Woerden. The name of the village is a reference to Cockaigne, a medieval fictional land of plenty. Until 1989, Kockengen was a separate municipality. From then until 2011 it was part of the municipality of Breukelen. History The village was first mentioned around 1307 as Cokanghen. It started as a 12th-century as a cultivation concession, and the name was probably chosen to attract farmers. Many of the early settlers were serfs from France. In the 14th century a church was built. The tower dates from 1635. During the 17th century, it was prosperous village, due to good water connections to Amsterdam and Utrecht. In 1840, Kockengen was home to 677 people. The is a polder mill, a pumping station to drain the excess water from the polder, which was constructed in 1653. In 1675, it was redesigned. Cockaigne
Cockaigne or Cockayne () is a land of plenty in medieval myth, an imaginary place of extreme luxury and ease where physical comforts and pleasures are always immediately at hand and where the harshness of medieval peasant life does not exist. Specifically, in poems like ''The Land of Cockaigne'', it is a land of contraries, where all the restrictions of society are defied (abbots beaten by their monks), sexual liberty is open (nuns flipped over to show their bottoms), and food is plentiful (skies that rain cheese). Writing about Cockaigne was commonplace in Goliard verse. It represented both wish fulfillment and resentment at scarcity and the strictures of asceticism. Annemieke Kiesel-Griffioen
Annemieke Kiesel (née Griffioen; born 30 November 1979) is a former Dutch footballer and coach. She played for clubs in the Netherlands, United States, England and Germany, winning titles with Dutch and German clubs. She also played for the Dutch national team between 1995 and 2011, retiring with 156 caps, making her the player with the second most appearances for the Dutch national team (men and women) of all time. Following her playing career, she took on coaching and has worked either as assistant coach or as head coach. Stichtse Vecht
Stichtse Vecht is a municipality of the Netherlands and lies in the northwestern part of the province of Utrecht. The municipality has about 63,000 inhabitants and covers an area of about 107 km² (41 sq mi). Stichtse Vecht has been newly formed by a merger of the municipalities of Breukelen (in the west), Maarssen (in the east) and Loenen (in the north) on 1 January 2011. Geography Stichtse Vecht is situated north of the Utrecht, city of Utrecht, in an area called the ''Vechtstreek''. It is near sea level and is mostly rural with many pastures. Breukelen
Breukelen () is a town and former municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It is situated to the north west of Utrecht, along the river Vecht and close to the lakes of the Loosdrechtse Plassen, an area of natural and tourist interest. It is located in an area called the Vechtstreek. It is the namesake of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. History During the 17th century, many wealthy Amsterdam merchant families built their mansions along the river Vecht. In Disaster Year 1672 the village and no less than 8 castles and mansions near Breukelen were severely damaged by warfare. Most of them were burned down by the French. Woerden
Woerden () is a city and a municipality in central Netherlands. Due to its central location between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht, and the fact that it has rail and road connections to those cities, it is a popular town for commuters who work in those cities.
