Breukelen
Breukelen () is a town and former municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It is situated to the north west of Utrecht, along the river Vecht and close to the lakes of the Loosdrechtse Plassen, an area of natural and tourist interest. It is located in an area called the Vechtstreek. It is the namesake of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. History During the 17th century, many wealthy Amsterdam merchant families built their mansions along the river Vecht. In Disaster Year 1672 the village and no less than 8 castles and mansions near Breukelen were severely damaged by warfare. Most of them were burned down by the French. On January 1, 2011, Breukelen merged with Loenen and Maarssen to form Stichtse Vecht. The New York City borough of Brooklyn is named after Breukelen (see History of Brooklyn). Stichtse Vecht
Stichtse Vecht is a municipality of the Netherlands and lies in the northwestern part of the province of Utrecht. The municipality has about 63,000 inhabitants and covers an area of about 107 km² (41 sq mi). Stichtse Vecht has been newly formed by a merger of the municipalities of Breukelen (in the west), Maarssen (in the east) and Loenen (in the north) on 1 January 2011. Geography Stichtse Vecht is situated north of the Utrecht, city of Utrecht, in an area called the ''Vechtstreek''. It is near sea level and is mostly rural with many pastures. Within its boundaries lay the Maarsseveense Plassen, which are recreational lakes. Northeast it borders the Loosdrechtse Plassen, also recreational lakes, which lay in neighbouring municipality of Wijdemeren. Breukelen Railway Station
Breukelen is a railway station located in Breukelen, Netherlands. The station was opened on 18 December 1843 and is on the Amsterdam–Arnhem railway The Amsterdam–Arnhem railway, also referred to as the Amsterdam–Elten railway or ''Rhijnspoorweg'' in Dutch (English: Rhine railway), is an important railway that connects Amsterdam in the Netherlands with Utrecht and Arnhem, and continues in .... Kockengen
Kockengen is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of Stichtse Vecht, and lies about 11 km northeast of Woerden. The name of the village is a reference to Cockaigne, a medieval fictional land of plenty. Until 1989, Kockengen was a separate municipality. From then until 2011 it was part of the municipality of Breukelen. History The village was first mentioned around 1307 as Cokanghen. It started as a 12th-century as a cultivation concession, and the name was probably chosen to attract farmers. Many of the early settlers were serfs from France. In the 14th century a church was built. The tower dates from 1635. During the 17th century, it was prosperous village, due to good water connections to Amsterdam and Utrecht. Nieuwer Ter Aa
Nieuwer-Ter-Aa is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht (province). It is a part of the municipality of Stichtse Vecht, and lies about 13 km northwest of Utrecht. History The village was first mentioned in 1556 as Aade, and refers to the Aa River which is a tributary of the Angstel River. Nieuw (new) has been added to distinguish from Oud-Aa. Nieuwer-Ter-Aa developed along the river which was the main route from Amsterdam to Utrecht. The river became obsolete after the was dug, and dammed near the church in 1527. Castle Ter Aa was located near the village, and was first described in 1106. The castle was destroyed by the French in 1673. In 1696, the estate Quackenburg was built in its place and was demolished in 1902. There are now residential houses at the site. The tower of the Dutch Reformed Church dates from around 1400. A buitenplaats (literally "outside place") was a summer residence for rich townspeople in the Netherlands. During the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, many traders and city administrators in Dutch towns became very wealthy. Many of them bought country estates, at first mainly to collect rents, however soon mansions started to be built there, which were used only during the summer. History Buitenplaatsen or buitenhuizen could be found in picturesque regions which were easily accessible from the owner's home in town, and they were near a clean water source. Vecht (Utrecht)
The Vecht is a Rhine branch in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is sometimes called Utrechtse Vecht to avoid confusion with its Overijssel counterpart. The area along the river is called the Vechtstreek. Geography The Vecht originates from the city of Utrecht, where the Kromme Rijn stream forks into two branches: the Leidse Rijn/ Oude Rijn branch to the west and the Vecht to the north. Originally the Vecht branched off south of the city near the Roman fort Fectio, flowing eastwards around the city, but in the 12th century a northern shortcut was dug out. The Vechtstreek () (Dutch for "Vecht area") is a region in the Dutch provinces of Utrecht and North Holland along the Vecht River between the towns of Utrecht and Amsterdam.
