Kjerulf Fjord
Kjerulf Fjord is a fjord in King Christian X Land, eastern Greenland. History There are Inuit ruins at a place named Paradisdal. Excavations were conducted by James Wordie at the time of the 1929 Cambridge Expedition to East Greenland. There are also scattered remains of the now extinct East Greenland reindeer in the form of antlers and bones. The fjord was first mapped by Julius Payer during the 1869–1870 Second German North Polar Expedition led by Carl Koldewey (1837–1908). It was named after Norwegian geologist Theodor Kjerulf (1825–88), founder of the Geological Survey of Norway in 1858. Alfred Gabriel Nathorst
Alfred Gabriel Nathorst (7 November 1850 – 20 January 1921) was a Swedish Arctic explorer, geologist, and palaeobotanist. Life He was born in Väderbrunn in Sweden. Nathorst's interest in geology was awoken by Charles Lyell’s ‘’Principles of Geology‘’ and, at the age of 21, Nathorst visited Charles Lyell, Lyell in England in 1872. Nathorst was employed at the Geological Survey of Sweden in 1873-84. He was then appointed professor, by royal decree on the 5 December 1884, and was simultaneously made curator of the new “Department of Archegoniates and Fossil Plants" at the Swedish Museum of Natural History. He remained on the post until his retirement in 1917. Nathorst visited Spitsbergen in 1870 and participated in 1882–83 in the ''2nd Dickson Expedition'' ("Den andra Dicksonska Expeditionen till Grönland") led by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld. Isfjord
Isfjord, meaning 'Ice Fjord' in the Danish language, is a fjord in King Christian X Land, eastern Greenland. The Isfjord is part of the Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord complex''Prostar Sailing Directions 2005 Greenland and Iceland Enroute'', p. 120 in the area of the Northeast Greenland National Park. Geography The Jaette Glacier in the west and the Gerard de Geer Glacier in the north flow into the head of the Isfjord. Louise Boyd Land rises at the fjord's western end between the two glaciers. This tributary fjord extends between high mountains in a northwest–southeast direction for about 50 km until its mouth in the Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord at the southern end. To the northeast the fjord is bound by Andrée Land and to the south and southwest by Frænkel Land. Suess Land is a peninsula in King Christian X Land, East Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. History This peninsula was named by A.G. Nathorst after Austrian geologist Eduard Suess (1831–1914) at the time of his 1899 venture searching for traces of the lost Andrée expedition. Louise Arner Boyd (September 16, 1887 – September 14, 1972) was an American explorer of Greenland and the Arctic, who wrote extensively of her scientific expeditions, and became the first woman to fly over the North Pole in 1955, after privately chartering a DC-4 and crew that included aviation pioneers Thor Solberg and Paul Mlinar. Biography Born in San Rafael, California to John Franklin Boyd (part-owner of the Bodie, California gold mine) and Louise Cook Arner, Louise grew up in Marin County and the hills of Oakland playing and competing with her two older brothers, Seth and John. The Boyds were leading citizens of the era and their children's early years, though privileged and relatively carefree, included a well-rounded education that was punctuated every summer by an extended stay on their ranch in the Oakland Hills.
