Project Sarangi (Nepali: प्रोजेक्ट सारंगी) is a Nepali foundation that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of indigenous Nepali folk music craftsmanship. It provides tutorials in the playing of Nepali Sarangi and other Nepali folk instruments. Project Sarangi is based in Kathmandu, Nepal and was founded by sarangi player Kiran Nepali in 2012. Kiran Nepali is a third generation musician and plays sarangi with folk acts Navneet Aditya Waiba, Kutumba, Bipul Chettri and Playing for Change. History Beginnings Kiran Nepali founded the institute in 2012 at his home in Kirtipur and later moved to Lalitpur in Kathmandu where the project's office is based and classes conducted. Sarangi (Nepali)
The Nepali Sarangi ( ne, नेपाली सारङ्गी) is a Nepali folk instrument. It is a chordophone played by bowing. Traditionally in Nepal, the Sarangi was only played by people of Gandarbha or Gaine caste (both contested and interchangeable terms), who sing narrative tales and folk song, however, in present days, its popularity extends beyond the Gandharba community and is widely used and played by other caste members as well. It has also garnered much interest in other music genres, such as Nepali rock and film music. Navneet Aditya Waiba
Navneet Aditya Waiba is an Indian Nepali-language folk singer and the daughter of the late Hira Devi Waiba, the pioneer of Nepali folk music. Navneet and younger brother Satya Aditya Waiba (producer/manager) are the only artists in the Nepali folk music genre who sing and produce authentic traditional Nepali folk songs without adulteration or modernisation using mostly organic and traditional Nepali music instruments. Kutumba (band)
Kutumba is an instrumental folk Nepalese band. It only uses Nepalese traditional musical instruments such as bamboo flutes, sarangi, madal, tungna, dhol, jhyamta, arbajoo, dhime, dhyangro, damphu, khin, and singing bowl. The band recorded a single for season 6 of Coke Studio Pakistan, which aired in late 2013. They have collaborated with other Nepali artists such as Navneet Aditya Waiba, Satya Aditya Waiba, Albatross, Hari Maharjan, 1974 AD and Astha Tamang Maskey. Bipul Chettri
Bipul Chettri is an Indian singer-songwriter who sings in the Nepali language and plays Himalayan folk music with a contemporary touch. His debut album, '' Sketches of Darjeeling'', was released in July 2014 and his follow-up album, ''Maya'' in 2016 and six singles 'Basant', 'Gahiro Gahiro', 'Ashish', 'Teesta', 'Mughlan' and Neela Akash in the following years. His latest EP, 'Samaya' was released in 2021. He is based in New Delhi, India. Early life Bipul's grandfather was a poet and his grandmother used to play the sitar. Playing For Change is a multimedia music project, featuring musicians and singers from across the globe, co-founded in 2002 by American Grammy award-winning music producer/engineer and award-winning film director Mark Johnson and film producer/philanthropist Whitney Kroenke.
