Keriri Island is a rural locality in the Torres Strait Island Region, Queensland, Australia. It consists only of the island Hammond Island whose only town is also called Hammond Island .In the , Keriri Island had a population of 268 people. Geography Hammond Island is the town on the east coast of the island (). Bruce Point is a headland just south of the town (). There are boat launching facilities there. History Keriri Island was named as a locality on 2 July 2010. Hammond Island was probably named after naval office Sir Andrew Snape Hamond by Captain Edward Edwards on September 1791 while travelling to Timor in the boats after the wreck of HMS Pandora. Bruce Point was named after Robert Gerald Bruce, who worked as a pilot from 1922 to 1964 in the Torres Strait. Following his death 1973, his cremated ashes were scattered at this point. HMS ''Pandora'' was a 24-gun sixth-rate post ship of the Royal Navy launched in May 1779. The vessel is best known for its role in hunting down the mutineers in 1790, which remains one of the best-known stories in the history of seafaring. ''Pandora'' was partially successful by capturing 14 of the mutineers, but wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef on the return voyage in 1791. Admiral Edward Edwards (1741–1815) was a British naval officer best known as the captain of HMS ''Pandora'', the frigate which the Admiralty sent to the South Pacific in pursuit of the ''Bounty'' mutineers. Biography Early years The fifth of six children, Edward Edwards was born in Water Newton, a village near Peterborough, to Richard Edwards of Water Newton and Mary Fuller of Caldicot. He was born in 1742 and christened in St Remegius' Church, Water Newton. He never married. On 7 September 1759, age 17, he was commissioned as a lieutenant. To qualify for this commission he would have been required, in addition to passing a lieutenant's exam, to produce evidence of at least six years of sea time. No documents have been located to date which would establish exactly when, and under whose patronage, he started his naval career. Andrew Snape Hamond
Captain Sir Andrew Snape Hamond, 1st Baronet (17 December 1738 – 12 September 1828) was a British naval officer and Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1781 to 1782 and Comptroller of the Navy from 1794 to 1828. Career Born in Blackheath, London, England, the son of Robert Hamond and Susannah Snape, he joined the Royal Navy in 1753 and served during the Seven Years' War and the American Revolution. In 1765, he was made a commander and a captain in 1770. During the American Revolution he commanded North American station in the Expedition to the Chesapeake (1777) and commanded a warship during the defence of Sandy Hook in 1778, for which he was knighted. The Prince of Wales Island, or Muralag, is an island of the Torres Strait Islands archipelago at the tip of Cape York Peninsula within the Endeavour Strait of Torres Strait in Queensland, Australia.
