Kennedy Krieger Institute
The Kennedy Krieger Institute () is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, Johns Hopkins affiliate located in Baltimore, Maryland, that provides in-patient and out-patient medical care, community services, and school based programs for children and adolescents with learning disabilities, as well as disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and musculoskeletal system. The Institute provides services for children with developmental concerns mild to severe and is involved in research into various disorders, including new interventions and earlier diagnosis. History and mission Kennedy Krieger Institute opened its doors in 1937 when Winthrop Phelps, an orthopedic surgeon from Baltimore, responded to a direct need for treatment for individuals with cerebral palsy. Zanvyl Krieger
Zanvyl Krieger (April 1, 1906 – September 15, 2000) was an American businessman and philanthropist in Baltimore, Maryland. He was best known for his philanthropy, including major donations to the Johns Hopkins University and the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Krieger amassed his fortune through an investment in U.S. Surgical Corp, which manufactured surgical staples. Early life The youngest of eight children, Zanvyl Krieger was born in Baltimore in 1906 to wealthy Jewish liquor sellers and distributors Herman and Bettie Farber Krieger. Owners of the Gunther Brewery and the largest distillery of rye whiskey in the country, his parents were very successful in business. Herman Krieger died when Zanvyl was just four. A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that causes temporary or permanent changes in its function. Symptoms may include loss of muscle function, sensation, or autonomic function in the parts of the body served by the spinal cord below the level of the injury. Injury can occur at any level of the spinal cord and can be ''complete'', with a total loss of sensation and muscle function at lower sacral segments, or ''incomplete'', meaning some nervous signals are able to travel past the injured area of the cord up to the Sacral S4-5 spinal cord segments. Augusto And Michaela Odone
Augusto Daniel Odone (March 6, 1933 – October 24, 2013) and Michaela Teresa Murphy Odone (January 10, 1939 – June 10, 2000) were the parents of Lorenzo Michael Murphy Odone (May 29, 1978 – May 30, 2008), a child with the illness adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). They became famous for developing a controversial treatment using Lorenzo's oil for their son's incurable illness. This quest was recounted in the film ''Lorenzo's Oil'' (1992). Augusto had previously been an economist for the World Bank. In recognition of the parents' work, Augusto Odone received an honorary doctorate from the University of Stirling. Adrenoleukodystrophy
Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a disease linked to the X chromosome. It is a result of fatty acid buildup caused by peroxisomal fatty acid beta oxidation which results in the accumulation of very long chain fatty acids in tissues throughout the body. The most severely affected tissues are the myelin in the central nervous system, the adrenal cortex, and the Leydig cells in the testes. The long chain fatty acid buildup causes damage to the myelin sheath of the neurons of the brain, resulting in seizures and hyperactivity. Other symptoms include problems in speaking, listening, and understanding verbal instructions. Clinically, ALD presents as a heterogeneous disorder, showing several distinct phenotypes, and no clear pattern of genotype–phenotype correlation.
