Kavango West
Kavango West is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its capital and only self-governed settlement is Nkurenkuru, its governor is Sirkka Ausiku. The Region was created in 2013 when the Kavango Region was split into Kavango East and Kavango West. In the north, Kavango West borders the Cuando Cubango Province of Angola. Domestically, it borders the following regions: *Kavango East – east *Otjozondjupa – south *Oshikoto – west *Ohangwena – northwest Because of its rather high rainfall compared to most other parts of Namibia and its location on the Kavango River after which it was named, this region has agricultural potential for the cultivation of a variety of crops, as well as for organised forestry and agro-forestry, which stimulates furniture making and related industries. Namibia
Namibia (, ), officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in Southern Africa. Its western border is the Atlantic Ocean. Hifikepunye Pohamba
Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba (born 18 August 1936) is a Namibian politician who served as the second president of Namibia from 21 March 2005 to 21 March 2015. He won the 2004 presidential election overwhelmingly as the candidate of SWAPO, and was reelected in 2009. Pohamba was the president of SWAPO from 2007 until his retirement in 2015. He is a recipient of the Ibrahim Prize. Prior to his presidency, Pohamba served in various ministerial positions, beginning at Namibia's independence in 1990. He was Minister of Home Affairs from 1990 to 1995, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources from 1995 to 1997, Minister without portfolio from 1997 to 2000, and Minister of Lands, Resettlement and Rehabilitation from 2000 to 2005. He was also secretary-general of SWAPO from 1997 to 2002 and vice-president of SWAPO from 2002 to 2007. Samuel Mbambo
Rev. Samuel Kaveto Mbambo (born in Kavango Region) is a Namibian politician, diplomat, theologian, historian, and academic. He was a governor of the Kavango Region, and after its split into Kavango West and Kavango East, also of these new entities. He also served as ambassador of the Republic of Namibia to the Russian Federation and as Namibia's high commissioner to the Republic of India. Mbambo was appointed governor of Namibia's Kavango Region in April 2013, succeeding Maurus Nekaro. When the Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia, responsible for recommending on the country's administrative divisions suggested in August 2013 to split the Kavango Region into two, creating the new regions of Kavango East and Kavango West, Mbambo was for a few months governor of both. 2020 Namibian Local And Regional Elections
Local and regional elections were held in Namibia on 25 November 2020 to elect new local and regional councils. The previous round of elections was held in 2015 and won by the ruling SWAPO party. Electoral system Elections for regional councils are held using the first-past-the-post electoral system. Voters in each constituency elect one councillor to represent them on their regional council. Local authority councillors are elected by a system of proportional representation. Local authority candidate lists have affirmative action requirements for women. Election process Although Namibia has 1.35 million registered voters, only about 370,000 have voter cards that specify their area of residence, a requirement to elect local and regional councillors. Namibian Local And Regional Elections, 2015
Namibia held elections for their local and regional councils on 27 November 2015. Ballots were cast using electronic voting. Electoral system Elections to regional councils are held using the first-past-the-post electoral system. Voters in each constituency elect one councillor to represent them on their regional council. Local authority councillors are elected by a system of proportional representation. Results Regional and local elections taken together elected 199 woman out of the 499 available seats, partly because affirmative action for women is required by law in local authority elections. Tondoro Constituency
Tondoro Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Kavango West Region of Namibia. Tondoro Constituency was named after the village and mission station Tondoro, although the administrative centre is in the village of Mburuuru. In 2013 the Kavango Region was split into Kavango East and Kavango West. Tondoro was formed from the western half of the former Kahenge Constituency. Politics As in all Kavango West constituencies, SWAPO won the 2015 regional election by a landslide. Joseph Sivaku Sikongo received 3,528 votes, followed by Peter Mutuku of the All People's Party (APP, 173 votes). Nkurenkuru Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Kavango West Region of Namibia. It was created in August 2013, following a recommendation of the ''Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia'', and in preparation of the 2014 general election. The administrative centre of Nkurenkuru Constituency is the town of Nkurenkuru. Before the administrative change in 2013 the area of this constituency, including the town of Nkurenkuru, was part of Mpungu Constituency in the Kavango Region. Ncuncuni Constituency
Ncuncuni (until 2013: Rundu Rural West) is a constituency in the Kavango West region of Namibia. It is located west of Rundu, one of Namibia's largest cities. It had a population of 38,281 in 2011, up from 26,623 in 2001. the constituency had 4,554 registered voters. In 2013 the Kavango Region, to which this constituency belonged under the name ''Rundu Rural West'', was split into Kavango East and Kavango West. The constituency was renamed ''Ncuncuni''; It belongs to Kavango West. Politics Herbert Shixwameni of SWAPO was councillor after the 2004 regional election. Ncamagoro Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Kavango West Region of Namibia. the constituency had 6,494 registered voters. Ncamagoro was created in August 2013, following a recommendation of the ''Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia'', and in preparation of the 2014 general election. The administrative centre of Ncamagoro Constituency is the village of Ncamagoro. Ncamagoro was formed from the southern part of the Kapako Constituency. Musese is a constituency in the Kavango West region of Namibia. The administrative capital is the settlement of Rupara. the constituency had 6,494 registered voters. In 2013 the Kavango Region was split into Kavango East and Kavango West. Musese was formed from the north-eastern part of the former Kahenge Constituency. Politics As in all Kavango West constituencies, SWAPO won the 2015 regional election by a landslide. Mpungu Constituency
Mpungu is a constituency in the Kavango West region of Namibia. It had a population of 20,787 in 2011, up from 18,660 in 2001, and 9,121 registered voters in 2020, up from 8,924 in 2004. The settlements of Mpungu and Mukekete are situated in this constituency. Before August 2013 the town of Nkurenkuru belonged to Mpungu constituency, and the constituency was situated in the Kavango Region. Mankumpi Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Kavango West Region of Namibia. The administrative centre is the village of Satotwa. Mankumpi was created in August 2013, following a recommendation of the ''Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia'', and in preparation of the 2014 general election. It was formed from the south-eastern part of the former Kahenge Constituency. Politics As in all Kavango West constituencies, SWAPO won the 2015 regional election by a landslide.
